In 1948, the Reverend Milton Brunson organized a mass gospel choir at Chicago's McKinley High School; dubbed the Thompson Community Singers, the group -- affectionately known as "the Tommies" -- would emerge as the nation's oldest existing community choir, celebrating their golden anniversary with the release of 1998's hits collection 50 Blessed Years. In the interim Brunson and his singers became one of the most honored gospel groups of their era, issuing eight gospel chart-topping LPs and winning a Grammy award in 1995. Their 50th anniversary was also celebrated with the opening of a post office named in Brunson's honor. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
WE SANG A LOT OF THEIR SONGS IN OUR YOUTH CHOIR AND TO THIS DAY I REMEBER EVERY SINGLE ONE. THIS IS TRULY WHAT MUSICIANSHIP IS.THESE SONGS HELP BRING ABOUT DELIVERANCE. NOT THIS BUBBLE GUM GOSPEL RIGHT NOW.
I use to sing with a group called The Bright Star Male Chorus and The Tommies were truly known throughout the industry as a group that brought it!! Awesome sound, great musicians, and their music was sung by every choir from coast to coast. Miss this era of great gospel music.

The Thompson Community Singers was the top selling gospel choir of the late 80's and early 90's. And won our first and only grammy in 1993, as best traditional gospel choir. Many of the musicians are now playing for other artists in the industry.

I'm Free by Rev. Milton Brunson is a song that reminds you that God has done something for you, so you don't have to sit on your butts when it's time to give him praise. He (God) has made of free from many things by yet and still we sit areound and continue to bound by those chains of selfishness, worriness, loniness, jobless and all of those other -less.
i love this era of gospel music, the lyrics were meaningful, the lead was passionate and believable, and the choir was awesome. the Tommies and the Hawkins are definitely two of the best choirs to ever record. there is a new up and coming choir on you tube called the Peace Gospel Choir the sings this style of music. I love it!!!!!!!!
