Smooth jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo was born and raised in Richmond, California, where as a child he frequently traveled to nearby San Francisco to take in free concerts by the likes of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream; still, he did not pick up the guitar until age 17, also drawing considerable influence from acts including James Brown, Miles Davis, and Earth, Wind & Fire. At the outset of his career, Obiedo regularly shifted between jazz and R&B, working with a variety of artists including Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester, and Sheila E.; he also led the fusion unit Kick as well as the rock outfit Rhythmus 21. After signing to Windham Hill, Obiedo made his solo debut with 1989's Perfect Crime, followed two years later by Iguana; with 1993's Sticks and Stones, he reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. After 1995's African-influenced Zulaya, he resurfaced two years later with Sweet Summer Days, and 1999 saw Obiedo move to the Domo label for the release of Modern World, a hybrid of R&B, pop, and Latin jazz. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
I really loved this sound soothing enough for me to make a dress without feeling stress. st Louis is also missing Jazz stations. we have one left but it plays mix music on the weekend. (not good)
I'm proud to say that I too am from Richmond, California, true home of the East Bay Grease, a new release to attain the peace. Ray Obiedo's a breath of fresh air, comin' from right there, yes, right there.....Yeayah!!!

I am lucky to have Yoshi's in Oakland and San Francisco to bring in some of these artists but miss the exposure to their new music since all the smooth jazz stations evaporated thanks to Clear Channel dictating what we want to hear. . bah!
ronald_thomas6627..unfortunately its happening all over. When i was living up in the Seattle area(another jazz mecca area with Jazz Alley) the jazz station KWJZ one Sunday just signed off at noon!!! The station manager Carol Handley(sp) made the announcement then came on some rock an roll ..ruined it right there for me.Jazz station in Sac,Ca,94.7,gone.Jazz station in Reno,NV,92.1,gone.We need to keep whats left there..there.I'll take jazz any day..hands down!!!!
I realy enjoy a artist that has their own sound, so many these days are just copies of sombody else's style. I'm glad to say Ray Obiedo stands out from the crowd.
That's not Ray singing, but I'm familiar with his music, around the era of the early nineties. Wonderful guitar player. When Smooth Jazz stations were prevalent, we were able to hear alot of our artist. What happened where Rock Stations come in take over?
I like this cut Cha La Island from Sweet summer Days, will check out the others on this cd. Ray's Sticks and Stones is timeless! I still enjoy listening to it. Want to find Zulaya, it sounds interesting.

actually comment below is from secretary of John Carrigg.
Missing from Pandora is the 1991 hit album 'Iguana' with the fast-paced 'Werewolf' where you can actually imagine a chase involving one, and the lurking 'Terrible Beauty'. He had several other albums before and after, all missing from Pandora.
What happened to Ray, he appears to have disappeared after the fall of the WTC? Can you shed some light on him? I love his music but it seems he only did three alblums then, gone.
