Rasputina

The New York City-based trio Rasputina was led by singer/songwriter Melora Creager, a classically-trained cellist who backed Nirvana on the group's final tour. In 1992, Creager placed a want ad seeking other cellists to form a rock band; among those responding was Canadian musician Julia Kent, and with the later addition of Polish native Agnieszka Rybska, Rasputina was born. The three cellists' image further developed by the addition of tightly-laced vintage Victorian costumes, their gothic chamber-pop soon caught the attention of Sony, who issued the group's debut Thanks for the Ether in 1996; Transylvanian Regurgitations, an EP featuring remixes by fan Marilyn Manson, appeared a year later, and in 1998 Rasputina resurfaced with How We Quit the Forest. By the new millennium, Rybska and Kent had been replaced with Nana Bornant and K. Cowperthwaite. A deal with Instinct surfaced in 2001 and the magical mystery of Cabin Fever appeared the following spring. Bornant's stay was brief; she left in June 2002 and Cowperthwaite followed four months later. Zoe Keating (cello) and first ever male bandmate Jonathon TeBeest were quickly added to the beautiful chaos of Rasputina just in time for the 2003 release of the Lost & Found EP. Frustration Plantation, their most cohesive work to date, appeared in spring 2004. In 2007 the group released Oh Perilous World, a loosely-connected song suite culled from newspaper clippings that lead singer Melora Creager gathered over a two year period, then juxtaposed with the band's signature 18th century steampunk imagery. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Saw them live once. Such a great time.
Coolest band ever
Ms. Creager is a first rate musician, not just a cool sideshow.
Amazing live band!
I really want to see them live. They make cello even more awesome than it already is...Makes me wish I played.
love it
I seen them live. Absolutely amazing! =D
Rasputina dominated my high school life. Thank you Melora.
cheflizzie

met a woman wearing a concert T-shirt & had to check them out; they do an amazing cover of Heart's "Barracuda" on A Radical Recital

You have to check out Daniel de Jesus - he's incredible to see live!
I just want to make sure that people know the current line-up is: Melora, Daniel de Jesus (who is also a painter and has his own group), and Catie D'Amica. They will be touring all over the country this summer. A Rasputina recital is an event that should not be missed!!

jbblades, thanks for the suggestion, I am adding Abney Park to my playlist.

I saw them open for Kula Shaker at the Whiskey in LA (which I've played at!), and they were great, definitely different, the corsets were cool.
And Kula Shaker put on a great show.
This is a strange band that ive always had an appreciation for.

This sounds awesome! Plus, it must have gotten a trillion times better with the addition of Zoe Keating, 'cause she is DA BOMB!!!!

If you all want some real steampunk listen to Abney Park. If anything the artist named Dr. Steel was the creator of this genre! He has three cds and he isn't even on here.
I love Rasputina! I only recently heard of them, when my brother let me borrow his copy of Radical Recital (I still have it... I forgot to give it back)to help me decide whether to decide whether to play cello or bass.
Original and still fresh after all this time! Cabin Fever's their best, with How We Quit The Forest a close second. Also, I really don't see what the big deal is with saying they fit a steampunk aesthetic. They've got the right blend of Victorian sensibility and anachronism.
Steam punk is a fashion and lifestyle oriented around alternate history usually including imagery from the Victorian era as well as science fiction-esqu e aesthetics inspired by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells era authors.
It's been a while since i listened to them. Been a fan since they came out.
I think J.Ankenny was dropped on his head at birth.Steam Punk wtf is that?
Diamond Mind still makes me laugh every time I hear it.
lambethii
uniquely refreshing. Interesting music.
I saw them live after listening to all their albums for years and it was incredible!! I even converted a somewhat conservative friend to them, Tori Amos and Regina Spektor. Melora and the group are true artists.
steampunk? what the f**king f**k. no. jason ankeny stomps puppies, it's his favorite.
k8hansen
I agree. Rasputina is not steampunk. That statement made me shudder, then puke all over my computer.

Fave band since high school! Lurves!
mindlynx
been in love with them for 8 years
what the hell? since when is rasputina "steampunk"? (well, since 2007, says the album description. . . )

first abney park, then this?

no fair! steampunk is stealing all my favorite goth bands!

who next? voltaire?
*Pumpernicle * thinks it bizarre, that s clasic. love it.
stillattheto p
I'm liking it. It is a very unique sound.
Love em, been a big fan for a few years now :D
I've been listening to the “Ladies' Cello Society” since the days of Thanks For the Ether. Over the last 12 years their music has inspired and amused. Here are some of my favorite tracks that you won’t find on Pandora:
Favorite Rasputina Songs part 1

Thanks for the Ether:
* My Little Shirtwaist Fire ->This song unintentiona l l y opened my young eyes to feminist critique, plus, it totally rocks!
* Stumpside -> A reworking of common themes from "Golden Grains" promotional EP
* Any Old Actress -> Wonderfully sad song, again with the feminist critique
* Rusty the Skatemaker -> The soundtrack for my late adolescents, and one of my all time favorite songs.
Favorite Rasputina Songs part 2

How We Quit the Forrest:
* Olde Headboard ->Politics of taking matters into your own hands. Plus a Space Ghost reference
* New Zero -> Just great melancholy
* Trenchmouth -> This song is incredibly evocative of my childhood in the sandy pines land of North Florida. Flat lands, kudzu jungles, limestone springs, sink holes and trailer parks, miles and miles of trailer parks.
* Things I’m Going to Do -> Don’t pull many punches here.
* Watch TV -> The Fangril’s anthe
Favorite Rasputina Songs part 3

Cabin Fever:
* Thimble Island -> Back to North Florida,
* Sweet Water Kill (The Ocean Song) -> Somewhat aberrant song for them, but I like it.
* Our Lies -> A fan wrote the lyrics, which speaks a lot to what this music can do for people.
* AntiqueHighH e e l R e d D o l l S h o e s ->Rock it kooky!

Misc:
* The Vaulted Eel -> Could someone please re-release this? I’ve just got a bootleg copy off of AudioGalaxy. It is such a beautiful song.
* Warbots
Perfect insanity and cello music that I adore and can't get enough of.
Love your creations.
They're really cool!
