Ralph Vaughan Williams

October 12, 1872 - August 26, 1958
born in Down Ampney, England, composed during the Romantic period
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was a central figure in the renaissance of English music that occurred in the first part of the 20th century. Using long, smooth lines and modal tonalities derived from folk sources, he deftly fashioned a unique style in the post-Romantic vein. At the core of his output are his nine symphonies and other orchestral compositions, such as his Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending. His choral settings of hymns, carols, and folk songs -- some of which have become the standard setting -- appear in several collections that he co-edited. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi

Greensleeves was written by Sir Francis Bryan, courtier to King Henry VIII. Henry VIII set the words to music. Both were my ancestors.

One of my most favorite English composers.Us e s strings in a luxurious manner. Love his work dearly.

Rafe, as he liked to be known has a distinctly lyrical English to the core style that can be beautifully haunting at times. His Lark Ascending comes to mind, which some times would bring my wife to tears....

I was taken to a concert at a local church hall just south of Gloucester by my father & his musical friends in 1957 as a 7 year old. My love of the violin was the reason they took me. They played Lark and it was great, magical. As we were leaving one of our party started to talk to this gentleman who turned out to be RVW. He shook my hand and hoped I liked the music, I was stunned and stammered yes. My father took a picture but it has been lost in time. Lark Rising a wonderful piece.

This is one of your worst biographies. Please provide more as you do on some of the Russian composers (or I'll have to go to (choke choke) Wikipedia. Thanks.

A lovely composition written for symphonic band. The orchestral rendition loses something, but still it is an enduring and great work.

RVW draws on something in me that few other composers can tap. I love the richness of his music and the way it rises and swells to sweep over you. Fantastic.

I have listened and collected music all my 59 years; all genres, all styles. This is my favorite piece of music, bar none, of the thousands I enjoy. More than that, this piece is me. This is my biography in sound.

Has anyone else ever thought about RVW 3rd & 5th symphonies as war symphonies (WWI and WWII), and been struck by his originality? Does anyone else think the 3rd should have been marked an elegy, rather than a pastoral? Or the 5th, isn't it partly a response to the sturm & drang of the Nazi taste? The triumph of ethos over pathos, the pilgrims progress in the worst circumstance s ? I don't understand when people say things like 'these symphonies make me think of cows in the field'.

Came upon Vaughn Williams working backwards from Fairport Convention and the Pentangle--a savior of English folk music. Shout out to the Pastoral Symphony he wrote after WWI, which is worth a listen instead of the overplayed Tallis/Green s l e e v e s / L a r k .

Beautiful piece of music. Gorgeous melody, originally written by King Henry VIII. He should of spent more time writing music and less time divorcing his wives.

This is perhaps my very favorite piece of music. I first heard it as a teenager over 50 years ago and could not get it out of my head. The sound of this delicate yet powerful music has carried me through many of life's tough spots, reminding me of the Earth's great beauty.

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you started reading this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters this is so scary because it works
