Rachael Sage

Rachael Sage is a New York City songstress whose music playfully avoids simple categorization. Weaving together bits of folk, pop, rock, blues, jazz, and cabaret while stirring in Celtic and Middle Eastern accents, Sage has created an eclectic body of work that's witty, graceful, and powerfully intimate. Born in Port Chester, New York, Sage developed a taste for music at an early age, listening to her parents spinning the Beatles, Billy Joel, Buddy Holly, and George Gershwin on the family stereo, and by the age of four she was learning to play piano. It wasn't long before Sage discovered she had a gift for learning songs by ear, picking out tunes she'd heard on the radio. By the time Sage was in second grade, she was honing her talent for writing and performing songs, finding it was a good way to distract the bullies at school, and in time she would formally study voice, drama, and dance (she was admitted to the prestigious School of American Ballet, and attended the MFA program at the Actors Studio).

When Rachael received a four-track recorder as a bat mitzvah present, she began learning the nuts and bolts of audio recording and production, and after enrolling at Stanford University, Sage was soon regularly performing at local coffeehouses. In 1996, Sage recorded her first album, Morbid Romantic, and released it on her own MPress Records label. (In time, MPress would grow into a successful independent label, releasing albums by Melissa Ferrick, Seth Glier, and A Fragile Tomorrow as well as Sage's body of work.) By 1999, Sage had released a second album, Smashing the Serene, and performed on the Village Stage on the 1999 Lilith Fair tour, as well as being chosen to open for Ani DiFranco on a tour of Europe.

A prolific songwriter and recording artist, by the time Sage dropped Blue Roses in 2014 (which included Sage performing a duet of Neil Young's "Helpless" with her close friend and mentor Judy Collins), she'd released 11 full-length albums and two EPs, brought home four Independent Music Awards, and won the grand prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In addition to her busy recording schedule, Sage tours regularly, playing upwards of 100 dates a year with her band the Sequins (Kelly Halloran on violin, Ward Williams on cello, and Andy Mac on drums). Sage is also a published author and an accomplished visual artist who has displayed her work in New York galleries and provided illustrations for her album packaging. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Just saw her live. She is an amazing singer and soul. I'm listening to Pandora at work right now, and the song Chandelier came on...just as I was thinking how much I absolutely love this song. Good timing.
I adore Rachael's songs..they have the depth of feeling and whimsical beauty!
I love her... I can't get enough of her!!!
SHE ROCKS!
Not enough women, and too much perfume! At least the last 1/2 is correct (politically and really). Best wishes.
I've just become one of her oldest fans. Thanks for the exposure. I never would have heard this artist among my crowd.
I found Rachael Sage on this website by listening to Joni Mitchell, i've been a huge fan ever since and can't wait to own all of her albums
She's a real talent, and I've been a fan for a lllong time.

Rachael Sage is my all time favorite artist. The song "One True Thing" off of her Ballads and Burlesque album seriously describes my life. Whenever I am going through a bad time I can turn to a Rachael Sage song. Seriously, I don't know what I would do without her music.
I'm a fan. Thanks Rachael!
again rachael sage, thank you, (f**k you, queen of s**t) - a comment about previous stuff
hey Rachael Sage, thanks
um - so i guess some of you folks don't appreciate good music - i am impressed that she started so early and has obviously done well - her singing style reminds me a bit of Jewel - i like her ;-)
We Tori fans do tend to be pretty intense... *laughs & smiles*

But I don't want to be mistaken, so I'll clearly state here for the "Public Record"... I really do like Rachel Sage. I think she's a very solid, gifted, artist and I really enjoy all her music.

I just don't think it's fair to either her or Tori to compare the two. One, Tori has been making music a lot longer than Rachel. Two, they approach music from two very different perspectives .
Wow..you Tori fans are pretty intense! Uh just an observation. . . but queen of whittier..yo u r retort made me laugh.."soft dried up hag" too funny! When this song came on again (after I listed my 1st comment nearly 2 months ago) I wondered why I gave her a thumbs up...she's not that good.
please don't compare this soft dried up hag to tori amos thats just bad manners. really do you kiss your mom with that mouth? 20 hail marys for you, rachel sage is boring so 50 hail marys for her, and now i've got to do some for associating with a**holes, thanks b**ches. ------ peace! ~queen of whittier
Other than the fact that they both play piano and their songs boast creative, often thought-prov o k i n g , lyrics, I don't see much comparison between Rachel Sage and Tori Amos. Both are phenomenal artists, but Tori's craft is far more intense, ethereal, and all over raw, where Rachel's sound tends to be slightly more refined, yet at the same time subdued. Her voice has a much more earthy quality as well.
I like her. Tori Amos anyone?
