After Nickel Creek disbanded in 2007, mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile assembled an all-star quintet called Punch Brothers (the name comes from the Mark Twain short story Punch, Brothers, Punch!) with guitarist Chris Eldridge, formerly of the Infamous Stringdusters; bassist Greg Garrison, who has played with Ron Miles and Leftover Salmon; banjo player Noam Pikelny, who has worked with John Cowan and Tony Trischka, and violinist Gabe Witcher, a sought-after session musician and a member of Jerry Douglas' band for a half-dozen years. The new group quickly signed with Nonesuch Records and issued a debut album, Punch, in 2008, which was anchored by Thile's ambitious 40-minute, four-part suite "The Blind Leaving the Blind." The double-disc (plus a third DVD concert disc) Antifogmatic, produced by Jon Brion, arrived from Nonesuch in 2010, and was followed in 2012 by Who's Feeling Young Now?, produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse), and the Ahoy! EP. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
I love this song. But I sang safe and sound in the talent show! My fav part in safe and sound is: ooh, ooh,la la la la,la la la la, ooh, ooh, la la, oo oh

WOW WOW WOW just got back from their opening night touring the new Who's Feeling Young Now and all I can say is Get Thee to one of their concerts! All that incredible musicianship done live, so incredibly tight - real craftsmen. Amazing original sound that references all genres, all done incredibly well, seguing into showmanship classic bluegrass, then right back out again ...sigh. Easy on the eyes to boot.
I heard these guys as a pre-show Paul Simon and was impressed. I want to see these guys in concert again. Quite good.

Saw them in June at Great American Music Hall in SF, then again at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Amazing.

I heard this group at ROMP in Kentucky in June. I had never heard of them before, but once I heard them play, I was hooked. They are a great group. They are now one of my favorites along with the Steep Canyon Rangers, Railroad Earth and the Infamous Stringdusters.
Punch Brothers are one of the most dynamic bands whose music I've had the pleasure of getting to know. Each member plays his instrument with virtuosic skill, and though there would seem to be plenty of ego to go around in the group, each member seems happy to have the spotlight on the groups rather than himself. Bluegrass-y, avante-garde, classical, folksy music.
I first heard PB on Prairie Home Companion one winter Sunday...thinking at first, "oh yeah, just another homey bluegrass band..." except they were playing the "Blind Leaving the Blind Suite" which ain't no regular bluegrass tune and I was hooked. Since then, I have seen them play live four times and enjoyed that even more. They are joyful to watch and listen to. Go ahead, do a YouTube search and watch and listen to them take on Radiohead covers (Packt Like Sardines in a Crushed Tin Can, one
Their music is like indy bluegrass/rock/folk. Remarkable instrumentations; virtuosos all! Noam Pikelny makes me look at the banjo with new ears, so to speak! I am constantly wondering how those delicate and fluttering riffs could possibly become more air like. But they do. I would love to call it bluegrass, but it certainly is not...but then again, it is.........Wonderful stuff, so glad they are together.
NEED TO UPDATE BIO - Greg Garrison is no longer the bass player in Punch Brothers. Paul Kowert is now bassist for band. Fuller bio at http://www.punchbrothers.com/about/
what a great piece of engineering and an excellent performance. I am drawn to the quality of the vocal over this whole record. I find myself guessing what mic and pre they used...87 and a 1073? It's dry and perfect, alive but alone. Amazing, classic Nashville style quality.
What a concept - learn how to read music, music theaory, style, inspriation from the best, talent, practice, hard work, devotion to craft, fun attitude, love of life..and look at the end results. These guys should be an inspration to all, both in the music world and in life in general
Basically if youre just now listening to them, your only mistake is not listening sooner! =D

Punch Brothers have essentially innovated an original and esoteric genre of music. Punch Brothers are a combination of virtuosic talent, using instrumental creativity, improvisation, and abstract boldness that somehow still manages to euphonically follow the rules of musical technique and theory. Basically, they're brilliant.
The greatest band I have ever seen! I was having the worst week of my life but hearing just one measure at a concert in MA completely turned my week around. There are very few bands or musicians I would give up a weekend for but Punch Brothers and Chris Thile get a whole weekend when the come to Portland in March

Just close your eyes,
The Sun is going down,
You'll be all right, no one can hurt you now,
Come morning light you and I 'll be safe and sound.
Close it
Say your crushes name
Say your name
Say a day of the week
Open your hand
On day you said they will ask you out
