I'm a jazz fan but i grew into it through rock, As a young rock guitar player in the early '70's I was drawn to artists like Jeff Beck, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, John Mayall, and Traffic which added elements of jazz to thier music. From there I fell in love with fusion both "west coast" (Crusaders, Tom Scott and the LA Express, Spyro Gyra, George Benson, Grover Washington, etc.) and the more progressisve side (Weather Report, Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra). I also loved the progressive rock stuff (Bill Bruford, UK, Passport, Gong, King Crimson, Brand X, Gentle Giant, etc.)
My alter ego is enthralled with acoustical things (Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Dave Grisman, Brian Sutton, Union Station, Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, etc.)
There's very little music I dislike but I'm drawn to music with an interesting edge - harmonically, compositionally and improvisationally - regardless of genre.
