I really like music that captures an emotion. I don't really like music that fakes emotion. You know? Like when the singer uses that shaky or fancy voice? Sounds like an a**hole is singing. I also like when the words are creative and there are more than two chord progressions and there is an interesting vocal melody. I don't like over-production. I like simplicity and rawness. I like music that expresses the hard-to-describe essence of experience. I hate when artists sing about how they are "all alone, blah blah blah, kill yourself and my mom". I like when artists sing about problems in a poetic way and not in a "save the whales and the babies" sort of no duh, stop whining sort of way. I also like when artists create cool imagery with their words, like in this one song by Vetiver, On A Nerve: "Pulling back the sheets and covers, only to find, the freight and baggage that grows, on the family tree". You know, solid gold lyrics like that. I like music that is sarcastic and satirical too. I like a wide variety, but in that range I tend to be very picky because music has become a landfill.
