That book by Nabokov...and that great 1962 film by Kubrick, featuring James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon, and Peter Sellers. Great creepy role for Mason and Sellers in a strangely hilarious part. Anyway, a great song from a former English teacher, Mr. Sumner. The Police video was more pervy actually. :~)
It saved me from having to read that book. The Police were masters of juxtaposing darker lyrics with incredible energetic music. Their songs take far more than one listen to to get the whole picture. Great music does this. On one hand it is horrific but unfortunately not as uncommon as we would hope. Plus, the band is such a tight trio. Of course Robb below said it al lot more concisely. Awesome.
I love this song; the lyrics combined with the almost haunting melody create an irresistable piece. Listen to Watashi Wa's rendition of "Message in a Bottle," for it is quite good also.
This was probably the first song I listened to that made me really start learning lyrics. This and LOLA by the Kinks. Didn't realize all songs weren't about dogs, crops, and bad girlfriends. Ah yes growing up in NC!
@pat ludwig: When this song was released, the Beach Boys were still recording, but Sting's lyrics were miles beyond the simplicity of most of Brian Wilson's composition...I love the Beach Boys, but I can't even imagine them doing anything as subversive as this lusty tale of a tortured and tempted teacher.

When I heard this the first time, I thought the Beach Boys were suddenly recording again. I went through two cassettes of this album.
