I always thought it was a metaphorical story of a monster crawling up from below by some belch of evil that the earth shat forth, coming to wreak havock upon some far flung Scottish village who only gets phone services on tuesday. But, the idea that the story was acutually about a man pressed to his limits by the stresses and expectations of family sounds good, too.

One of Police's best....but I like Synchronicity I better
Rob, I think Daddy goes nuts and kills his family and/or himself. The monster crawling up from the depths of the dark Scottish loch parallels the nervous breakdown Daddy is experiencing - the two events are in synchronicity.
One of the deeper Police songs I love .... I don't see a lot of similarily to U2 -- U2 has the Celtic undertones -- Police has the garage-punk sound, but mystical in their own right and sophisticated.
Wow, what a hard-hitting, reserved kick-a** rock song. Unbelieveable drums, art-rock guitar and jaded, cynical existential lyrics - the best song by The Police?
this song rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.. their music was always a reflection of what really
wasn't quite real, but seem to be close enough to
my life's circumstance, that the power of the lyrics
helped me break on through to
the other side.

The pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache.
This and "Secret Journey" are my favorite Police songs.
What do you think happens when Daddy gets home from work?...
Congratulati o n s ! So few have managed to be so wrong, in so many ways, with so few words.
