King Of Pain

Lyrics

There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in the high tree top
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop

Someone please explain the story of this song to me
Classic 80's album of all time! Sting,Andy & Stuart, gentlemen you went out with a BANG! We miss you.

The Police forever!
i would listen to this song in my cd player everytime i go to school or come back from school. good times.
Now i think its about being free and strong.
Used to think this song was about paranoia and suicidal thoughts.
Innovators combining punk ska and rock sting is and always will be a musical.geni u s . The police helped to define a generation that was about to be.consumed. b y Disco Music. EEEECCHHK,
Huge police fan, love it
You can't blame Sting for wanting to getaway from some of the punk/ska sounds that the band built its foundations on coming out of the late 70s. Sting was actually beginning to help to give The Police a more defined and refined sound heading into the 80s at the forefront of the time period that would ultimately be their peak and demise as a group. It is sad that the control issues were so prevalent in the band, and we didn't get more from them before the break-up.
This song helped me get through a very dark period of my life, and I'll always remember it for that.
Guitarist Andy Summers joking calls this Sting's 1st solo album, lol, on account of it not featuring any of the ska-ish sounds that were present in some of the songs off the 1st 4 albums, and Sting having the greatest control with regards to songwriting, what songs made it onto the LP, etc.
Its still good music thats what really matters.lol
Could listen to this forever
The Police were one of the perrenial bands of the 80s, but did they realize they would receive that label at the time. It is strange how we look back at artists and bands decades later and think of them as belonging to a particular era and their sound becomes a reflection of those moments in time. Music become nostalgic when it loses its currency.

The S.W.A.T. Would be the "king of pain"
A decent track, though So Lonely and Synchronicit y II are better.
Syncronicity was probably their best stuff.

Hey Rice, it wasn't so much ego, as it was Pride, thinking more of himself than he really was. and now we all know, and where is he now and who is listneing to him? But you got it right,. Too bad he's got that fabulous distinctive voice, like nothing else still. wish he went the right way, don't you?
The Police at their peak. Before Sting's ego got the best of him and he went solo with his tree hugging, holier than thou, I'm so pretty brand of music.
Excellent song. Like the lyrics.
Loved this song. Tells a sad story like much of Sting's stuff. Very intelligent lyrics, but at the same time very listenable.
Whatever you say, future McDonald's employee.

@kreios9, yes!
One of the coolest songs I have ever heard.

Neat song.

This example in 'The Blues of Ironic Twists-Of-Fa t e , ' reminds me of Alanis Morissettes' the "Ironic" song, about the tragedy of ironic twists-of-fa t e . Whereas Morissettes' version is a little more of a tongue-in-ch e e k - b l u e s , The Police hit-it-on-th e - n a i l - h e a d in this one, I think, in a more darker, bluesy flavor--on the subject of ironic twists-of-fa t e .
coolest. lyrics. ever.

Also is similar (at least the first minute) to "On Broadway" by the Drifters and covered by Livingston Taylor

I remember being backstage in July 83 with these 3 guys and their thousands of managers and staff. alone, sting is not! The music still stands up to a critical listen even today-and that's not easy to do!

"...wow virtual bed buddies..." ok, that's funny...sorr y dj but you gotta admit...anyw a y , Stuart Copeland really holds this one together...t h e reverb
on his snare is dialed in just right...stin g ' s bass is right out front where
it usually is...this song is well put together
This is one of the songs that takes me back to my younger childhood years when I was in much agony.
King of Pain.. amazing song. a unique musician Sting is.
Ah Sting....I had such a crush on him in the 80's.
Summer of '83 was a bummer! The only good thing was this song!!
vidsmith66

summer...83. . . o u t s t a n d i n g
