Phyllis Hyman began her career as a silky voiced, jazz-influenced singer and gradually moved into slick, heavily produced urban contemporary ballads and light dance numbers. Hyman won a scholarship to music school and then began her professional career with the group New Direction in 1971. When they disbanded after a national tour, Hyman joined the Miami ensemble All the People. She also worked there with another local group, the Hondo Beat, and appeared in the film Lenny. That was followed by a two-year stint heading Phyllis Hyman & the PH Factor, before relocating to New York. Hyman performed background vocals for Jon Lucien and built her reputation performing in New York clubs. Norman Connors made her his featured vocalist in the mid-'70s, and she was highlighted on a cover of the Stylistics' "Betcha by Golly Wow," which reached the Top 30 of the R&B chart. Hyman also sang with Pharaoh Sanders and the Fatback Band while cutting two singles as a lead artist. Buddah released Phyllis Hyman in 1977, but she really began making an impression when she was signed by Arista the next year. The songs "Somewhere in My Lifetime" and "You Know How to Love Me" both made the R&B Top 20. Hyman got her lone Top Ten hit in 1981 with "Can't We Fall in Love Again," but her albums did consistently well throughout the '80s. The production teams of Mtume/Reggie Lucas and Narada Michael Walden/Thom Bell gave her material that showcased her skill with sophisticated ballads. Hyman had more success when she left Arista for Philadelphia International in 1986, with the single "Living All Alone" putting her back in the R&B Top 20. She also sang on fusion and light jazz dates by Joe Sample, Ronnie Foster, and Grover Washington, Jr., a more conventional jazz session for McCoy Tyner, and a pop date with the Four Tops. Tragically, Hyman took her own life on June 30, 1995; Forever with You was issued posthumously. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
It saddens me that Ms. Hyman didnt feel the LOVE that so many had for her and how we all truly appreciated her music, words and sassy personality! Who knows what would have become of her life had she held on a little longer?! PLEASE tell the ones u love -----u LOVE them and show them now! Thank God her music lives on ......I feel her spirit when I hear her songs and think of her. Sanggggg Ms. Hyman:)
Phyllis Hyman, No gimmicks; the real thing. She's a singer! The sultry, smokey voice was a precursor to Anita Baker; with much better diction. While she's not with us in body; she's still with us in spirit; and in the beautiful music she left with us. What good is a song if it can't inspire. If it has no message to bring. If a song cannot take you higher, then it's not good enough to sing. She takes me higher.
she was a great hit in belize in the 70s and we use to tag along with her treated us like royals, shrimps and lobster. she also had a very handsome husband by the name i believe larry when i visited my daughter in ny my sis was dancing to her music and my daughter were having great ball, this was in 1994. so sorry when i heard she had taken her life. rip.

One of her albums, was the first album that the man I was dating at the time ever bought me. I married him over 30 years ago........and YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME is our song. Miss you Phyllis
I miss her sultry voice and the songs and lyrics that came from her soul. There will never be another Phyllis Hyman, she was ONE OF A KIND.

I fell in love with her the first time I heard her--even before I saw her picture! She was a beautiful artist, and technically impeccable, all in the same package. All these years later, I still miss her.
I remember the place and time I heard of her death over the radio. I froze and truly felt the lost of a friend. I saw her perform so many times. She was such a gifted singer and an amazing talent. But she was sad and alone, it resonated in the album Prime of my life. The world lost such a beautiful songstress on 6/30/95. I look forward to the time when I can hear you sing for me again.
Phyllis Hyman, what can you say about her. She was a truly gifted artist. Her songs painted a picture and you could feel the emotion and passion of her words and voice. Gifted and talented stars are only with us for a season but her body of work will be with us a lifetime. Rest in peace my beautiful angel and sing with the heavenly choir.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works!
I remember her performing in Wash DC in a small club during Prime of My Life. She descended the staircase with a such a presence! Her rich voice truly touched our souls deep down. Miss ya Phyllis...
She was such a beautiful spirit. I truly love her music. And I miss her.
