Australian musician, songwriter, singer, producer, and record label owner and executive Peter Furler has specialized in a very '80s-sounding alternative pop and rock sound throughout his career as a star on the slightly edgier side of the Christian contemporary scene, most of it spent in the group he co-founded, Newsboys, which owned the Christian pop charts in the '90s. Furler was born in McLaren Vale, South Australia, on September 8, 1966, the son of Christian missionaries, and the faith he grew up with clearly became his thematic center and constant when he became a professional musician. Furler formed Newsboys with friends George Perdikis, Sean Taylor, and John James, and in the first incarnation of the band, he was the groups drummer, although he wrote and produced most of the songs. He stepped out from behind the trap kit to become the lead singer when James left the group in 1997. The band was a tremendous success, sketching out a template for how a praise & worship rock act could broaden its fan base into the secular arena without sacrificing its faith-based intention, not always the easiest thing to achieve. Furler founded Inpop Records in 1999, along with fellow Australians Dale Bray and Wes Campbell, and took an active role in the label as a producer and executive. By 2009, he was scaling back his role in the Newsboys, and by 2010, he was well into a solo career. His debut album as a solo artist, On Fire, appeared from Sparrow Records in the spring of 2011. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
I got to see Peter last year during the Winter Jam tour with Skillet. He was awesome! I only got to see him once with the newsboys and that was during the Go tour of 2008. Good thing too, because he left a year after that! I prefer Peter Furler to the revamped Newsboys. He's the real deal for me.
Peter Furler is the one person who writes and sings the best Christian music I have ever heard. I was so glad, after he left the Newsboys, that he was going to start a solo career. On Fire is the best I've heard from him and anyone else in Christian music. He is also going to be releasing another album sometime in the beginning of this year. Can't wait for more from him!
his song I'm alive really speaks to me! Where would I be without God. I cannot set myself free from sin; I cannot save myself. Only God can save me! Only God can make me alive!
waaaiiiit a second! He used to be in the Newsboys! Love his voice :)

Our family also had the opportunity to meet Peter Furler and I completely agree with the reviewer below. He was sincere, kind and very genuine. He has been an awesome role model for my son who is an aspiring musician and the fact that he was so nice when we met him only cemented him as our families #1 musician. He was truly someone that you could imagine just sitting down and having coffee with.

Peter Furler is one of the most Christ-like and gentle spirits I have ever had the honor to meet. This man is truly led by the spirit of our Lord and I absolutely love his music. He is a musical genius because he does devote himself to the cause. My favorite artist of all time because he is completely genuine! God bless you Peter Furler!

Great album. Reach, I'm Alive, Glory to the King, Faster and Louder...really energizing!!
When I hear his new songs I feel like I'm listening to the Newsboys. His voice it what makes the band, but I have to say that they're still very good with the change.

Michael Tait does a great job... but it is like a new band
Peter Furler is great! The Newsboys are really great too! Michael Tait and the rest of the "crew" are fabulous! Saw them live a couple of weeks ago at WinterJam 2011
