I have moved all my life and in my travels found a real sense of belonging in the music I listen to. I grew up with my older sister enthralled with the Beatles so I was exposed to the British Invasion in the First Grade. Of course, I was listening to American groups like The Beach Boys and later The Doors, Simon and Garfunkel. As my taste evolved I was more into Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Cream.
We moved to Puerto Rico when I was in Eighth Grade, my exposure to new music was limited to a half hour of Armed Forces Radio. I used to run home from school to listen to Jersey Joe spin the latest hits taking The States by storm. There was Carol King, James Taylor, Three Dog Night, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and more Beatles.
Jimi Hendrix had his hit Hey Joe and I received the "Smash Hits" for my birthday which I wore out on my father's stereo (my litle portable was no longer sufficient). We went on vacation to visit relatives and I had a chance to see Jimi live in Seattle. I was four feet from the stage and he looked at me, a little suprised to see a 14 year old kid bopping to the tunes and yelling out requests in a squeaky voice.
We moved to New York in my junior year of high school and I started listening to the cornucopia of music available like: Tull, Moody Blues, Yes, ELP, Traffic, Allman Brothers, etc.
I have mellowed in my years and have a real affinity to folk/rock like C,S,N and Y - especially Y. Neil Young has a gift of lyrical imagination few are able to match. I love the tunes of James Taylor, Grateful Dead, Steve Winwood, Linda Ronstad, Bonnie Raite, Joni Mitchel, Dylan.
