They should have played this song when Forrest Gump was running from coast to coast. I'm sure Eddie had the lyrics for it, just hadn't produced it yet.

Sweet!!
Great song
A I just like pearl jam:) lol
Y'all can compare Pearl Jam to anyone you like...most of us aren't paying much attention. Eddie is one of the most brilliant and unique song writers/poet s of our time. Similarities between Given to Fly and Goin' to California? The notes on the sheet music don't agree with that.
pauldonovan3
Sounds like an "'Ode to a saviour" very close similarities
Love pearl jam
josephtice23
From Tool, Chino Morieno from the Deftones, Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam,

Given to fly what an amazing song by Pearl Jam a band that has been lucky enough to keep making great tunes......P . S . they also have in my opinion one of the three best singers in ROCK even to this day and they are in order Maynard
Wrigley field I will be there!!!
Seen PJ twice. One was great the other was drunk Eddie Veddar lecturing on politics. I would still recommend seeing this great band for yourself.
Unintelligib l e vocal delivery?

Top 3 Favorite by these guys!!

@Bull: Led Zeppelin ripped off plenty of both riffs and lyrics for their songs and didn't give the original artists credit for it, although as far as I know Going To California is all original. Don't hate on PJ for borrowing their riff because they're just doing exactly what Zepp did.
blusienna
When I first heard the opening riff I thought it was a Pearl Jam cover of Goin to California. Hmmm
not sort of like it. That's what you call rip off. Pearl jam still kool.
waynel67
Is it just me or does 'Given to Fly' sound sort of like Led Zeppelin's 'Going to California'?
I love this song!! Pearl jam is amazing!
thirty_one
on of my favorite PJ songs.
I like how it builds up like a wave and then crashes with the chorus
Pearl Jam rocks!!

This song makes me wish I could give "Two Thumbs Up" in Pandora.

Another band I've yet to see in concert. For my age, I should be ashamed as I was in college when they started their run.

Pearl Jam = Beast Mode
I love this song!!
Oh, and "Given To Fly" is a fantastic song! And just magical live.
Maybe it sounds a bit like Going to California, but not that much...I've done side by side comparisons, and they are certainly different enough. Plus...Do y'all really want to open the "padora's box" of "they copied so and so"??? In that case, there are about 5000 rock songs that copied from someone else's work. How many ripped off Chuck Berry? The Stones were basically an imitation band until they found their own voice in the late 60's. Bottom line is every band ripps off every other band.
i believe because there's so many interpretati o n s of flying and how it's learned, martin :) that took a very long time to get out of my head, needed to share that with y'all lol

The verse has the same chords as "Going to California" and the melody's very similar. Of course Eddie Vedder sings about an octave lower. (; I would bet as a joke they'd add on Plant's lyrics mid-song in concert! It's still a good song, though. I just got Yield after leaving Pearl Jam behind for years. I was a big fan from Ten until Vitology. They lost me with No Code. Not a bad album, just not what I'd call a keeper. I got Yield from the bargain and I'm glad I did.
monicagquart o
underrated much? :(
wait, why do so many bands share this song name?
marina83
No way. I totally agree....the intro is really close to Going to California.
because its not. I love Zep. But you need to clean your ears man. This is an amazing song.
Beautiful, powerful song. Top four for sure.
i love eddie veder he is what music is.. and pearl jam is no comparasion to any other.
Fantastic tune. I'd say one of their 3 best, along with Wishlist & Black.
andtokman
a human being that was given to fly
THIS SONG FREAKIN OWNS!!!!
hate to break it, here, but they hit most out of the ballpark. i saw one hit a goalie once..
metalhaid
This song so totally rocks. I'm not a big Pearl Jam fan but there's no denying they hit a few out of the ballpark. This is one example.
