Gosh, I can only hope to see them in concert again!! What a fab experience!! Great memories of Pearl Jam!! Eddie is the man & his voice soothes me for some reason....lol❌❤❌❤
This song always makes my brain short circuit. Can't ever understand any of the words and sounds like he is drunk with marbles in his mouth.

EV's got no business singing blues-I'm glad he puts a non-blues melody to this- guitarist NOT a strong bluesd player either...sorry - and I'm a fan....
I have read that as well...I have been to several concerts and the words are never the same. I swear at the last concert in Indianaopolis he sang about hot dogs! I think some of the words kinda stay the same though. Fun song!
I read an interview that Ed gave, years ago. He said that he never truly wrote lyrics for this song. He wanted his voice to be just another instrument. I have stopped trying to figure out the what the hell he was saying YEARS AGO. Just enjoy the song as it is....
The line is box or a bag and has nothing to do with FOX News. Although, that did give me a nice chuckle. The song was written in lkie 1992, I am not even sure FOX news existed then, for one. Secondly, like many others have stated it is about a a soldier coming home in either a box or a bag.
jcp2, you say what the does fox or bag mean? Theres a lot of PJ songs that the lyrics don't seem to mean something you think they do. I've heard this song played and sang 4 different ways at 4 different shows. It kicks arse no matter what and is a great closing song. And Mike can rip this song up in the end solo different each time to.

My favorite lyrics are the misheard lyrics to this song. Come on, make me fries.

"box" not fox. About a soldier coming home in a box or a bag.
McCready does the solo, he actually plays the majority of the song. Stone really plays a background acoustic throughout.

Is that McCready or Gossard playing the outro solo? I love when whomever it is slips into E pentatonic for that sweet lick at the end. Nice change from the happy/cheery major scale the studio solo was written in.
So so these are correct to any version. The studio version or the one he sings in this version. And the guy below is right - its "box or bag" as in coffin or body bag, just think about it what the heck does Fox or bag mean???
ha, it's funny cause he sings different lyrics every time they perform it live, so the only version you could really put lyrics for is the studio...and these are incredibly wrong for this version anyways....PJ RULES!!!!
lol, every time I hear this I have to see the chats and then re-post... because his brother is dead, they are wondering if his body will show up in a box or in a bag.

Where is the unintelligible lyric tag for this song? This is my quintessential unintelligible song. XD
I'm guessing that it is something in remembrance of Huddie William Ledbetter, but I could be mistaken pandora00000 2 . He was a blues artist better known as Led Belly... look it up on google,
I heard: "On a wayside was a pittah pattah. An' a say wanna say wabba shay... Ah yabba dabba doo..." ROFL. Does he ever actually say "Yellow Ledbetter" in any version? Eddie, you crack us up! 'Cept for that whole tired political anti-capitalist crap. I mean, you're a rich dude thanks to capitalism fer cripes sake!
