Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town

Lyrics

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting familiar yet I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me

Awful f*rts they fade away.
Follow me, I'll follow back! :)
Vedder said of this song: "It's kind of about a lady, and she's getting on in years, and she's stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay 'cause then they're the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there. So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in, and he's probably driving a nice car and looking kind of sharp - not a fancy car, but he's moved on. And the

This started out as a poem written by Eddie Vedder. It is about 2 people (possibly lovers) who are reunited after many years, one of whom stayed in the same town all her life, and the other who left. (thanks, Andy - Arlington, VA)

This track captures everything that is beautiful and powerful about music - brilliant and timeless.
It's hard to pick my favorite lyric from this song. I love this song. There's just something so wistful about this song.
This makes me sit on a chair while staring out a window.
Love Soundgarden and pearljam and nirvana great 90's bands aic too so many great 90's bands good time for music back in the 90's miss it :( :)
Eddie Vedder is still alive though
But Kurt Cobain started drugs at 14.
He continued that and tried to stop.
He got to addicted he wanted to die.
Krist and Dave thought that it was so bad, music was the only thing that could keep Kurt Cobain alive

Yes, this sounds like it should be under Nirvana, not Pearl Jam.
But just saying, I don't believe Eddie ever did drugs
Not a huge pearl jam fan, more soundgarden, but this song is great.
Simply great
Eddie Vedder and Kurt Kobain. Both incredibly popular but no one can understand either of them.
In my opinion don't get mad
Pearl ham is the best band ever
Similar to Simon and Garfunkel similar time period which helps explain. The music is beautiful it is a soul felt music, much better then the pop today.
Sounds like maybe where Crazy Mary may have been flying around too. No L-O-I-T-E-R- I - N - G allowed. A different type of Elderly woman.
Always will love this song a classic
So relateable.
How do you recognize an old lady's breath?

In fact, this is about the only one that still elicits a decent emotional response from me.
One of their great songs that gets forgotten about because of the ponderous title.
Didn't fully appreciate this song in high school even though I wore Vs out. I like it more now. First show I went to was Pearl Jam In Murfreesboro , TN at MTSU in '93. Only time they ever covered Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.
