At the time Eddie was already singing to a dead father that he never knew. His dad was in a band in his younger days and that served as a majorinflunce on his life decision to pursue a music career. I think its safe to say that he would be proud of his son.
dave, that was some lame story made up by the band. Pearl (color) Jam (sperm) refers to semen.

Come on people. This song is about Eddie's relationship with his father. Listen to the lyrics.

@Eric, are you an idiot, yes or yes? The name of the band came from Eddie Vedder's (that's the lead singer)grandmother's preserves she would make every year. The best of these preserves, or jams, she would call her "pearl jams" The name is both a homage to his late grandmother, and a metaphorical reference to to band's music. Now go get your head out of the toilet and read yourself a book real good like.
I am a huge Pearl Jam fan and I have never heard that this song is about ejacultion. Where does that even come from? The lyrics are no where near anything like that. I would not be offended but still I do not see it at all. Its probably cuz the song is called "Release" thats something like a teacher we had that had the last name "SEXton" so people assumed he was a pornstar......
idk why Pearl Jam fans would be offended by saying the song was about ejaculation. Im not and I am a fan. Most poets and writers have multiple meanings to their work. the deeper the work the more meaning you can extract. Sex is powerful and just as deep of a topic as any.

Such a great song, and the perfect ending to the album TEN. If you don't have that album, pick it up, and listen to the whole thing start to finish. It's amazing how the order of the songs causes the album to flow so well. Release is just the perfect finish. Truly a masterpiece :).
Bill Clinton-that comment is offensive to those that love Pearl Jam-All of Eddie Venders lyrics are deeply personal and poetic, not just fillers to the hard music like a lot of rock. Don't post if you don't no what the F- you are talking about.

Still my favorite song by Pearl Jam, puts you in a melodic trance.
Ha! Look at the writers. Mike Ament and Vedder Vedder. Whoops!

No, it's not. It's about his strained relationship with his father and step-father, and how he just wanted release from the pain. If you don't know what a song is about, it's ok to ask.
