In the early '80s, this bassist and synthesist was mired in the glitz and grind of pop music as a member of the group Missing Persons. Then friend Peter Baumann, best known for his work with Tangerine Dream, made O'Hearn an offer he couldn't refuse. Baumann had visions of starting a record label catering to his first love, contemporary electronic music, and he wanted O'Hearn to become a charter member of the new company. Nearly a decade and a half-dozen albums later, O'Hearn is still amazed at the success of Ancient Dreams, the richly hued debut release that established his career as a solo artist and helped launch the Private Music label. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Oregon, O'Hearn was exposed to a wide variety of music by his parents, who were both working musicians. Though he studied cello, violin, and flute, he gained early experience playing bass with his parents' lounge act. As his musicianship began to excel, he found himself accompanying jazz greats like Joe Henderson, Joe Pass, Tony Williams, and Charles Lloyd. While living in San Francisco in the mid '70s, he played with Frank Zappa and co-founded the visionary progressive band Group 87 with Mark Isham and Peter Maunu before joining Missing Persons. O'Hearn's style reflects all of these experiences within the context of a highly personal electronic sound. During the late '80s, however, his innovative vision seemed to blur under the strain of the commercialism infiltrating the new-age and contemporary instrumental realms. Urged on by increasingly conservative, pop-oriented executives at Private Music, O'Hearn conformed to more conventional song forms on albums like Between Two Worlds and Rivers Gonna Rise. His music suffered from excessive predictability as a result. The record label even released some crass disco mixes of the composer's most tuneful selections on the embarrassing Mix Up. Fortunately, O'Hearn's good musical sense prevailed in the long run. His more recent releases Eldorado and Indigo are both admirable, highly satisfying albums. He is, however, the last remnant of the Private Music label's original roster of innovative, electronic-based instrumentalists. So Flows the Current marked his second release of the new millennium, issued in early 2001. ~ Linda Kohanov, Rovi
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works

Beyond This Moment : Haunting, Beautiful, Magnificent, Perfect
I love this album and it's cover. Like the small boy (Patrick?) I connected with nature to find peace from the insane world that surrounded me. Transformation is one our greatest achievements. Thanks for your gifts today.
There is none other to compare to Patrick O'Hearn. He is in a league of his own and rightly so. He takes me on journeys far into other lands, as with Ancient Dreams and deep within my own soul with so many of his other magnificent recordings. I have written my own music, worked on my novel and just unplugged listening to Patrick. What a blessing to have his music in my life! Simply ethereal! I have 7 recordings but love this channel for the variety. Incredible!
This is the most strikingly biased bio I've ever read. O'Hearn's first three solo albums were amazing, and hardly what I'd call predictable, unless you mean predictably fantastic. While I cannot argue that Eldorado was indeed *more* recent, didn't that come out in '91? '92? Mixup may not have been O'Hearn's baby, but it's still a great album that stands the test of time to remain as entertaining now as when it was first released - this bio is a greater embarassment than that album. As for being
I believe Patrick recently played bass for John Prine, an interesting mix.

I thought this song sounded familiar, and now I know why. I'd bought 'El Dorado' back when I was fifteen. All the good stuff in that I hear in this. I'd even forgotten the name of the musician, to my shame. I look forward to hearing more of his stuff, and am glad that he stayed true to his music.

This song speaks to my soul and I love him for it. I could not express in any sort of context how this song infiltrates my being, and renews me.

It was in a high end stereo shop in NJ that I first heard the newly released Ancient Dreams played on CD for me to demo some speakers. I even remember the saleswoman. I've been a huge fan ever since and have Mr. O'Hearns complete discography in my collection. Almost defying categorization, his music is simply music, with all the beauty and potential held in that word. IMO he has produced some of the finest albums of the last 30+ years, and I thank him sincerely.
The review typifies the Album Mix Up as 'embarrassing, but I've been searching for a track of that album for years - the Illusionist. When a track sticks with you for over 20 years, you know it's good! It was on the Eldorado Album, but that version was not as memorable. Terrific artist!

I've loved Patrick O'Hearn since I was 18 years old when I first heard him was in the cool Jazz radio station in Florida. I didn't realize this guy was origially from Missing Persons... omg I was totally surprized.. Rock On Patty boy!.
Rivers Gonna Rise started it all for me. I picked it up in cassette form in Eureka Springs Arkansas and listened to the entire week I was up there cruising around in my Jeep. I called it my Ozarks tape. Beautiful stuff. El Dorado was my next and I've been adding them to my collection ever since. My user name on a lot of message boards is FTO (Forever the Optimist). One of the best.
I became a Patrick O'Hearn fan when I saw him playing bass one night at a Missing Persons concert at Cal State Northridge in the early '80s. I also saw him at the Wiltern in L.A. co-headlining with Yanni in 1988. That was a guilty pleasure. I really fell for Ancient Dreams when it first came out. I've collected each of his successive albums. I sampled and listened to several artists on the Private Music label in the '80s on the strength of Patrick's albums. It's great to hear him on Pandora too.
I bought Patrick O'Hearns - Ancient Dream back in 1988 in Florida on Cassette, i wore the poor cassette out, I have since purchase all his CD's that i could find and listen to him.
Hard to believe this is the the same guy from Missing Persons. Thank you Peter Bauman for showing him how to make Real music. The Tangerine Dream lives on!
O'Hearn consistently creates melodies that transcends the usual bland elevator music that characterizes so much of the New Age genre...some is pure genius...a toast to my fellow Irish-American!

I agree with Carlo as there is never words needed or appropriate for our New Age scores as they do our talking from our minds!
