Passport

Passport is the creation of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger, who has stated that Passport is not so much a set group but a label and a name for his many projects. Doldinger, who had started out playing Dixieland back in the 1950s, by the following decade was a modern tenor saxophonist who also worked in the studios. His mind has always remained quite open and in 1970 he formed Passport to explore the combination of advanced jazz improvising with rockish rhythms. Passport matches Doldinger's reeds (tenor, soprano, flute, and occasional keyboards) with an electric rhythm section. The group's first recording (1971's Passport) also included Olaf Kübler on second tenor and flute, organist Jimmy Jackson, electric bassist Lother Meid, and drummer Udo Lindenberg. Soon the group went through the first of many complete turnovers. The mid-'70s version usually teamed Doldinger with keyboardist Kristian Schultze, electric bassist Wolfgang Schmid, and drummer Curt Cress, and by 1978 the group had changed drastically again. However, no matter who was in the rhythm section, Klaus Doldinger's lead voice and his band's musical direction remained consistent through the years. Passport has released numerous albums, initially for Atlantic and subsequently via recordings and reissues for WEA and its subsidiaries and licensees, through into the 21st century, including 1996's Passport to Paradise, 1997's Passport Control (on Connoisseur), 1998's Move, 2000's Passport Live, and 2003's Back to Brazil. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Guten tag! One of my favorite jazz bands coming out of Germany! Anyone remembers another german great KRAAN?
First heard this group as background music in a stereo store. when I got my first gig, on public radio jazz station, one of the first sets I played included this LP. Great group of talented musicians.
One of the few bands that I own every single album, still blows me away but that is what you get when real musicians get together.Cig a r Scotch Passport

I believe "Infinity Machine" was my first Passport album. I never get tired of hearing Klaus Doldinger's music. It is so refreshing!

First time I heard Ostinato off of Inifinity Machine I was a 19 year old kid in 79. Need I say any more.....Tha t song still blows my mind to this day!!
I am more of a fan of the "trio" incarnation of Passport than the larger six piece band. However, I did like a couple of tracks on Sky Blue.
sky blue, that was my first taste of passport and i have used them for my sunday morning wake ups ever since. they led me to many other jazz influences, thanks...

Two of the best Klaus Doldinger LP's are the Doldinger Jubilee Lp's, celebrating Klaus' 25th and 30th years performing. The music rocks, swings and still holds interest today. One of the marks of a good musician is when he or she can sound fresh and vibrant playing live, (instead of sounding just like the studio version). Doldinger Jubilee does that.
Infinity Machine was my intro to Passport. The fun of this band is the string that runs through the music, but it doesn't get tired and still sounds pretty relevant today.
bruce.

I tend to agree with you as far as music that is presented to the masses and the whole "pay for play" s**t that goes on with radio and MTV. There is more good music out there now than EVER. You just have to look a little harder for it and know what you like.

THE FIRST PASSPORT ALBUM I LISTENED TO WAS CALLED "SKY BLUE" & I WAS HOOKED FOR LIFE ON THIS LONG-RUNNING FUSION OUTFIT. I TRY TO GET WHATEVER RECORDINGS OF THEIRS WHENEVER I CAN. A WORD TO FOUNDER KLAUS DOLDINGER: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I grew up listening to this LP & still love it. Amazing that Fusion was once considered 'commercial' music & Fusion concerts once filled 5,000 seat (or larger) arenas... you'd be lucky to get 500 people out to hear music this complex today!
Very under appreciated, especially on soprano.
If you can find Iguacu its one of Passports best albums.
These were the times of the Musician, when you had to study and learn to play an instrument. Times of exsploration , fusing electronics with creativity but not forgeting the harmonic underpending s of structure. Music, for the young has regressed and so has the world spiritually.
