Osibisa

The brainchild of Teddy Osei, a Ghanaian sax player, composer, and drummer who came to London to study music, Osibisa was one of the first African bands to win worldwide popularity. Their mix of African (especially highlife) and Caribbean forms made them a sensation in the mid 70s and their popularity continues today, even though recording dates have fallen off. ~ J. Poet

In 1971 my dad got their 1st album somehow and gave it to me - I was 9 years old at that time...it was quite a revelation for me to hear that kind of music.

This is one of the most exciting bands ever! And their performances were way out of this world. You can check them out on YouTube. George Clinton's Parliament is the only band that even comes anywhere close in terms of visual energy. They were the kings of the criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness. I'm disappointed that such an influential and world-renown e d group could merit only a paragraph in the Pandora biography page.

Once upon a time... Back in the day ...One hot summer Friday night around 12:00am three very young men around 17 years old left their employment and walked to the midnight concert at the Majestic theater in downtown Houston, Texas where Osibisa was the only band on stage. For the next 6 hour all I can remember was the sweet sounds of Osibisa and the smell of smoke smoke and more smoke.

I remember the disco era in the early 1970's, when I heard Osibisa in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. They became very popular. Today, I listened to them and reflected, that their sound, which mixes African music with western, that sound must've left an impression, which inspired me to listen to a lot of African music a decade later in the U.S. and people like Fela Kuti, Miryam Mursal, Majek Fashek, Amadou and Miriam are all awesome... from Africa
