Oingo Boingo

Although Oingo Boingo was often compared to Devo throughout their career (due to both bands' affinity for quirky new wave, goofy stage acts, and most obviously, peculiar yet intriguing band names), Oingo Boingo never obtained the mainstream success that Devo did. But the band did manage to obtain a large and devoted fan base, especially in their hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Oingo Boingo started not as a traditional group per se, as they were originally put together in the '70s by movie director Richard Elfman, who needed music for a whacked-out, John Waters-esque flick he was working on, called Forbidden Zone. Enlisting his younger brother Danny Elfman (vocals, guitar), Steve Bartek (guitar), and Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez (drums), the group originally went by the name Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo before shortening it to Oingo Boingo. Tired of sitting around and waiting for the movie's completion, the group began playing out in the L.A. area, where they built a substantial following with the punk/new wave set (as their lineup would often multiply for performances). But Oingo Boingo had a step or two ahead of the local bands, both musically and visually, as Danny Elfman had spent several years in France working with a theater group and studying orchestra, which reflected in Oingo Boingo's hodgepodge of styles.

The soundtrack to Forbidden Zone was finally issued in 1980, which proved to be a wild, musical roller coaster ride and gave Oingo Boingo their first appearance on record. But by the time a four-track release, 10 Inch EP, was issued the same year (on IRS Records), the group had focused their sound and approach drastically. A recording contract with A&M Records followed shortly thereafter, resulting in some of the early '80s finest new wave releases, 1981's Only a Lad (whose title track received plenty of airplay on the influential L.A. rock radio station KROQ), 1982's Nothing to Fear, and 1983's Good for Your Soul, the latter of which spawned a popular early MTV video hit for "Nothing Bad Ever Happens." Like their live shows, Oingo Boingo's recordings featured a hefty amount of additional members lending a hand, but despite it all, Danny Elfman remained the group's leader and focal point (Elfman even found the time to issue a solo album, So Lo, in 1984). A switch to MCA immediately paid off for the group, as they scored the biggest hit of their career with 1985's Dead Man's Party (eventually earning gold certification in the U.S.), made a cameo appearance in the hit Rodney Dangerfield comedy Back to School, and scored a moderate hit with the theme song to John Hughes' teen comedy Weird Science. But despite their commercial success, Oingo Boingo was unable to sustain it, as such further releases as 1987's Boi-ngo, 1988's Boingo Alive, 1990's Dark at the End of the Tunnel, and 1994's Boingo failed to storm the charts, yet managed to retain the group's cult following.

But during the mid- to late '80s, Elfman struck up a friendship with director Tim Burton and began contributing music to Burton-directed movies on a regular basis, first with the major comedy hit Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, and then later Beetlejuice, Big Top Pee Wee, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, and the remake of Planet of the Apes, among others. In return, Elfman became one of Hollywood's most in-demand film composers, providing music for countless films and TV programs (receiving Grammy, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Oscar nominations for his work). With Elfman primarily focusing on film composing by this point, Oingo Boingo was laid to rest in 1995 after a farewell performance at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheatre, which was issued a year later as a CD and video, appropriately titled Farewell. A pair of Oingo Boingo collections surfaced during the '90s, 1992's Best O' Boingo and 1999's double-disc Anthology, as were a pair of anthologies of Elfman's film scores: 1990's Music for a Darkened Theater, Vol. 1: Film & Television Music and 1996's Music for a Darkened Theater, Vol. 2: Film & Television Music. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

I loved the Forbidden Zone! Great movie.
Damn the start of violent love makes me feel funny everytime. =)
Hello Goodbye must die after their horrible cover of "Weird Science."

Love this song in Back to School!! Rodney Dangerfield is and always will be a PIMP!

Weird Science is the S**t, both the movie & song!
I've been a fan since the early 80's. I never missed their yearly Halloween performance at Irvine Meadows, Ca (now Verizon Amphitheater ) . GOOD TIMES!!! I've seen a few different cover bands but the BEST by far was Dead Mans Party. If you are a Boingo fan, they are a must see. Look for them all over SoCal. I caught them at the OC Fair. Had an awesome time, danced all night, and very affordable.
@swifteye12 Dude i totally have,i wasnt even old enough to know of them, and i'm a pretty brand new fan. but when they're getting ready to go onstage for the last time as Oingo Boingo i was tearing up.also when it was over. Loved how they sang Little Girls,No Spill Blood and No one lives forever. and every other song.

Listen to the Farewell concert on Youtube! It's magical.
Saw Johnny Vatos Boingo Dance Party this past november at a free event, had no clue what songs they were singing but i thought they were pretty damn awesome. Then on the radio i heard only a lad and recognized it soon after that went on youtube and fell Totally INLOVE with Oingo Boingo. I'm pretty obsessed.I go to youtube everyday and listen to boingo song after boingo song. First video I saw was private life and was dissapointed at how the lead singer looked(danny ) but fell pretty hard for Steve
Bartek, Vatos and many of the orig bandmembers still play on Elfman's film scores which people seem to love -- so somebody still likes them. Just apparently not you.
perhaps they just weren't for you. Fads by definition, usually dont last. Oingo boingo's music has been going on 33 years now. You have only to listen to the simposon's theme in the 90's , Nightmare before xmas or recent Elfman film scores to hear the haunting punk/ska suppressed rage vibe they brought to LA in the late 70's. AT a time when pop 80s music sucked and metal bands sold out (except Gn R) they brought real musician's and a freaking horn section to new wave. Bartek, Vatos and man
A fad band, a little of which went a long way. Glad to see that they have faded into radio obscurity. Elfman as a film composer is OK, but I don't need any Boingo, Devo or even worse, Talking Heads to remind me of that gimmicky and pretentious period in musical history.

PS, lucky to have seen these guys. Most incredible display of bass playing I've ever seen live. Creativity without the self serving showmanship.

I've never heard we Close Our Eyes. Great song. Shows a side of Elfman I've never heard.
For some reason this song very much reminds me of Camp Kill Yourself (CKY)... but Oingo Boingo is better.
Why only 723 likes? Best band in history!
They need the album only a lad on here!
Best haloween song ever.
Used to go the concerts in LA and Santa Barbara all the time...the Halloween concert was the best! Sorry there will never be a reunion tour...
No cover band can ever replace these guys!!!!!!
OMG! I've never been to one of their concerts now I never will:( :( I'm sry bout Danny's hearing loss :(
I LOVE U OINGO BOINGO!!!!!! U r my fav group even tho u r not a group anymore! I love u Danny elfman u r my hero!

Wish that cover band would come East, still really sad Boingo broke up.
That awkward moment when you realize the only real album by Oingo Boingo in Pandora's database is BOI-NGO... -_-

I heard a cover band in Lake Arrowhead CA and I enjoyed :)
(in response to marthas71)

Boingo disbanded in 1995, and Danny Elfman said there will be NO reunions. He has a hearing problem that's slowly progressing, and he says he doesn't want to risk it.

However, there's a Boingo tribute band in Southern california called Dead Man's Party. They are just as awesome as the original!!!
One of the most underrated bands EVER, as proven by the fact that I am the only one that has posted anything; amazing....
marthas71
Just one more concert in L.A. would be so epic!! Come back just ONCE MORE
The most amazing band that has ever existed. LONG LIVE THE MYSTIC KNIGHTS OF THE OINGO BOINGO!!!
Man, I miss Boingo. They did play one hell of a farewell tour though. Thank you Boingo. You will always be a integral part of my development and life.

Agreed -- Elfman and Mozart are great comparisons. I love his vocal performances as Jack Skellington on the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas. So distinctly Danny Elfman. Musician, songwriter, lyricist, singer -- all in one. He's the complete package. It's no wonder he's in such high demand. Keep making great music, Danny!!
GREAT band that was underrated!! !
Oh, and you must by the album to listen to no spill blood.
Okay, so Devo was getting big, but this group had way more depth compared to any 80's bands and Danny Elfman gets more movie soundtracks than anyone on earth including Kenny Loggins. Still love them 30 years later.
thepeates
Saw them twice in high school in Tampa . . . awesome.
Saw them in Austin, TX in about '85 or so. Saw some guys at the bar having a beer and just hanging out. Later saw that it was the band, including Elfman. Great show that night and years later at Cabaret Metro in Chicago. All good bands must come to an end, but, dude, I really miss this one.
Mary is one of my favs.
I love little girls...and oingo boingo...
Danny Elfman is a musical genius! A modern day Mozart, everything he touches is gold! Still the best show I've ever seen, hands down, no contest!! They are, and will always remain my all time favorite!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!
one of the Coolest Band Ever...even the Album Covers ...
Looooved the Boingo back in the 80's and bummed they will never play with Elfman again! =( There is however, a So Cal tribute band that does an excellent job. Throw back a few, watch these guys play and I'm back being a teenager!! Boingo lives!!!!
As a kid I ignored these guys infavor for bands and acts such as The Motels , Billy Idol , Prince , The Pretenders and so on . I wish I had not ignored them but I was like 10 when this came out so what did I know .
I was lucky enough to see them when they opened for U2 in Hawaii in the mid eighties!! What a concert 10th row center!
Saw them a couple times in Hollywood - great band, great show! I was in New York for a long weekend (early 80's) and saw that they were playing at the Peppermint Lounge. None of my friends in N Y had heard of them so we went and it wasnt even packed - you could party and dance right up to the stage. Me and my girlfriend knew all the words and were rocking out. This caught Danny Elfman's attention and he invited us backstage. He didn't know NY too well so me and my buddies partied and shared

i had the great pleasure of seeing the last 4 shows they played 2 in irvine and 2 times at universal. i was at the farewell show as well that was being taped. they are by far the best show givers ever. i have also had the pleasure of meeting the bass player a few times as well. i just wish they would come back for one last show.
No direct mention of 'The Simpsons' as part of Elfman's credits is certainly an oversight. I'd venture to guess that thanks to syndication that is his most recognizable (and profitable) work.
kithrup
Santa Monica Civic Halloween show, 1983 I think. Pure awesomeness. They had to take off their costumes halfway through, so hot in there.
Didn't Oingo Boingo also appear in the Tom Hanks film, Bachelor Party? I believe they sang a song called. I Love Little Girls (I think that's the name of the song, I know those words are in the song).
tig1218
My dad worked the sound board for Oingo Boingo. I grew up listing to them & had so many of thier t-shirts. I don't think I will ever forget going to their concert & hanging out with them all back stage.
I've been a boingoloid for close to 30yrs now. Saw the farewell show and it still is one of the top shows I have seen.
