Norman Greenbaum

Best-known for his 1970 hit "Spirit in the Sky," singer/songwriter Norman Greenbaum was born November 20, 1942, in Malden, MA. He began his musical career while a student at Boston University, playing area coffeehouses before relocating to the West Coast during the mid-'60s and forming a kind of psychedelic jug band dubbed Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band. After issuing the 1966 single "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago," which fell just shy of reaching the Top 50, the group disbanded, and Greenbaum subsequently formed a series of short-lived acts before finally returning to his solo career in 1968. A year later he issued his debut LP, Spirit in the Sky, releasing several unsuccessful singles before reaching the Top Three with the smash title track, which sold some two million copies. It proved to be Greenbaum's only hit, however, as follow-ups like 1970's "Canned Ham" and the next year's "California Earthquake" tanked; after the release of 1972's Petaluma, he retreated from music to focus on his California dairy farm, but returned to show business during the mid-'80s in a managerial capacity, also promoting a number of concerts. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Don't read this because it's retarted. You will not be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Now you've started reading so stop. When done don't press f6 and your lover's name will not come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!! !

Best religious song ever. Love it. And I'm an atheist.
WTf is up with all the Van Halen comments on this song's comments?
One of my favorite songs of its contexts
Regarding the VH comments below. Eddie is the joke. Until he gets off his high horse VH is done regardless of who is fronting them.
I want this played at my funeral!! I love it
Don't know how VH talk showed up here, but kbaker386 hit the nail on the head! DLR is a joke, Sammy rocks.....li s t e n to Chickenfoot.
Sammy made VH a complete band. EVH would have been wise to check his ego. DLR a showman only. What has VH done since Sammy left? Absolutely nothing.

The bio here is good -n-all but it does not address why a cat named Norman Greenbaum would be singing about how he has a friend in Jesus.... I have pondered this since the release of this recording... .
The sax is sexy
