Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov

March 18, 1844 - June 21, 1908
born in Tikhvin, Russia, composed during the Romantic period
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was a Russian composer of masterfully orchestrated music, named as a member of the nationalist "Mighty Handful," along with Borodin, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, and Cui. In addition to composing his own colorful music, which included the operas Le Coq d'Or and Sadko, and orchestral pieces, such as Scheherazade and Capriccio espagñol, Rimsky-Korsakov also worked tirelessly to complete the unfinished works of Borodin and Mussorgsky. Rimsky-Korsakov's completions have become controversial because of their polish and lack of authenticity, but his efforts preserved much of his friends' music. Rimsky-Korsakov is best known for the short character piece Flight of the Bumblebee. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Staccato is pretty polished, which i always knew to be the purpose. as far as authenticity ; i guess my question is- what gives people the idea that this piece lacks authenticity ?
Isn't that just creating a piece in mostly Staccato?
I'm surprised that Rimsky- Korsacov can be considered in this bio controversia l because of the lack of polish and authenticity . I guess I'm sincerely asking if perhaps the piece was creatively beyond understandin g in that era, or are polish and authenticity meant to define other controversia l aspects it could be, such as thievery, copyright infringement , a basement of composers waiting for him to tell them how to write this piece? the precision is genious, in my opinion.
Magnificent!

I hear an R-K influence in the music of John Williams. He should be added to the similar composers list.
Remembering this piece play every morning to get us kods up for breakfast. Just love it so beautiful, makes me feel alive.
I always enjoyed playing the big clarinet solo in Scheherazade .

Love love love love love SCHEHERAZADE ! So beautiful!!
Can you think of a prettier violin solo then the one at the beginning of this movement? I can't. One of my favorite Russian orchestral works. Rimsky-Korsa k o v use of color in orchestral writing is in a class all its own.
My favorite Rimsky-Korsa k o v piece is easily Scheherazade . Simply beautiful. The main theme on the solo violin transcends language.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this then you will die in two days. Put this on 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When you're done press f6 and your lovers name will appear in big letters.
The best of the Russian music masters!

I, also, would love to find Russian Easter Overature on Pandora
I love Russian Easter Overature but can't find on Pandora.
Probably have left a comment on how wonderfully this lifts my spirits, but they soar once again!
better beard than Smith Brothers
I believe Scheherazade is his best but I could be wrong. I just like the color one may derive from Scheherazade .
quite a memorable piece
I have five Melodiya CDs of his orchestral music, and it's all great. I agree with the previous comment that Russian Easter overture is perhaps his most beautiful work.
Much as I enjoy Scheherazade , wish to goodness I could find Russian Easter. It has so many authentic tunes from Russian Easter hymns, which I can recall singing in college.
The Snow Maiden - how perfect this December morning!
I have the strongest desire to see this played live. It is such a beautiful piece of music that I hardly know anything about.

this was the first piece of classical music ,after Peter and the Wolf, that I had ever heard (Carnegie Hall 1948) , and remains my most favorite piece of music
The only way I can write is by listening the the music of Korsakov.

Strange, it seems as though more than half of Rimsky-Korsa k o v ' s music is more than impossible to find. I know hes composed more than the scheherazade and some of these suites. hes closer to a hundred songs. I cant seem to find Russian Easter Overture either which is my absolute favorite song.
another instance of a gifted and talented human being losing his livelihood because of his political beliefs..gov e r n m e n t censors are maggots, alwa y s have been, always will.LEAVE THE ARTISTS ALONE...
A memorable composition I will number amongst my favorites.
The man blows me away. I suspect his phrasing has been copied by dozens of contemporary composers... . w a y ahead of his time.
It does not get any better than this...a virtual foundation upon which all symphonic pieces should measure their influences.

R-K wrote great stuff, but I wish he'd left some of his friend's compositions alone, especially Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain". He "cleaned it up" but also removed the nearly raw power of the piece. The original orchestratio n is rarely played but should be- it's really great just the way Mussorgsky wrote and orchestrated it. Apparently R-K thought it needed improving so as to be acceptable to audiences used to hearing something a bit less jarring.
