Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was a Russian composer of masterfully orchestrated music, named as a member of the nationalist "Mighty Handful," along with Borodin, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, and Cui. In addition to composing his own colorful music, which included the operas Le Coq d'Or and Sadko, and orchestral pieces, such as Scheherazade and Capriccio espagñol, Rimsky-Korsakov also worked tirelessly to complete the unfinished works of Borodin and Mussorgsky. Rimsky-Korsakov's completions have become controversial because of their polish and lack of authenticity, but his efforts preserved much of his friends' music. Rimsky-Korsakov is best known for the short character piece Flight of the Bumblebee. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
