Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debut album Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998 and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Ten singles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it top the Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previous albums in 2001 as well). 2002's Century Child proved a massive hit in Finland and around Europe but 2004's Once saw them go one step further and conquer Europe. Number one in Germany and number one in the European Top 100, Once's success was the product of a band at the top of their game following years of hard work. Marco Hietala was now on bass, replacing Sami Vänskä, while in 2005 Anette Olzon replaced Tarja Turunen, who was fired for personal reasons. 2007's Dark Passion Play and 2011's concept album Imaginaerum both featured Olzon before she and the band parted ways as Tuomas Holopainen took over lead vocal duties. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
Tarja's voice changed over the years, and not for the better. From this awsome, sweet celtic voice, to this forced vibrato. she started to sound like the cowerdly lion from the wizzard of oz. Annete and floor are awsome

First off, they aren't without a female vocalist. Floor Jansen from After Forever and ReVamp is the touring vocalist got the rest of their Imaginaerum world tour. After that's done, you can damn well bet they will hire a new FEMALE vocalist.
Secondly, Pandora, get your facts straight. Tuomas did some vocals on Angels Fall First, got bad reviews in his voice, and vowed never to song again. He never has and never will take over vocal duty again...that's why they hired Marco.
I miss Annette..she is the flippin' BOMB! Very versatile..that's what Nightwish needed! Tarja is very one-dimensional..not to say that she was bad, but not good enough for Toumas' vision, in the long run..Annette brought Soo much diversity in the few years with the band and sweetness...
Wow... just found out about Annette leaving. How can Nightwish go on w/o a female lead vocalist? At least they've left us a great body of work up 'til now... alas that all good things must come to an end. :(

You people that are negative..you.Stink! Listen to the beauty of Annette's voice..she is a star! With or without Nightwish..
lonewolf36
What? You guys are so hating on the Annette! What the F? She is gone..sad, as well as Tarja! So now who are you going to hate on? Chill...

Ewww...Tarja is No comparison to the fabulous Annette! OMG! Tarja was okay, but Annette is so versatile, and humble!
man i miss her so much this floor chick cant sing she has no breath control and cant hit those notes like anette :( just got into night wish have all the cds but if floor stays i just cant deal with this ugh lol
if they have a guy leading the vocals they'll be so different from what kind of band they are currently, and if they do at least have marco do the lyrics because he can sing amazingly tuomas not so much
Tuomas is taking over vocals that means Nightwish finally sold out. Damn I put up with Anette and I fell in love with Tarja but if this happens I guess its back to van halen .

Phantom of the Opera - Sacred Cows, that's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aiden, I agree. I like Nightwish quite a bit, but I do think Epica is better, mainly because Simone Simons has a more range and a fuller vocal range. My flatmate, who is an opera singer and vocal coach, listened to a few bars of one song and (without me saying anything), went, Yep, she's trained. Very well trained.
These type of songs are great because mainly when u go no vocal u can then picture some kind of video or fight in ur head like this one like rite now I'm thinking of sword of the stranger the movie....this band is sick I love.it...this song is pure great
I'm with drspangle7 here - come to Houston!!! But I'd drive anywhere in a 100 mile radius to see them though! Dang, I missed the last concert by 3 days!!

I think Traja was great
If they won't bring back Tarja, at least bring back Anette.
