One of the best (and only) jazz vocal groups of the 1990s, the New York Voices use a repertoire that includes bop songs from the vocalese tradition, plus adaptations of more timely material from the jazz and pop worlds. Leader Darmon Meader (who also plays reeds and the EWI) had taken a vocal group to Europe in 1986 through Ithaca College, using the name of the New York Voices. The following year, the group became official, consisting of a rhythm section and five singers: Meader (who also plays reeds and EWI), Caprice Fox, Kim Nazarian, Sara Krieger (later succeeded by Lauren Kinhan), and Peter Eldridge. They have recorded an enjoyable series of CDs for GRP. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
An absolutely FANTASTIC group, in my opinion. It's great to see a group of talented individuals who want to keep the great genre that is jazz alive. And, by far, Lauren is my fave of the group. Then again, I might be biased, being an alto myself. ;)

fantasic as a live group, as well. i almost prefer them live as to recorded. then again, now it's just Peter, Darmon, Kim (my favorite) and Lauren. they've been together for something like twenty years, and they are still fantastic and as energetic as ever. keep it up, guys.

Still at the top of their game. Love you, New York Voices!
This really is one of the only commercially successful jazz vocal groups started in the 1990's. That 5th voice sets them apart vocally from the Manhattan Transfer, who I've followed since the mid-70's. Their overall style is unique and the individual voices are excellent.
They do sound a lot like Manhatten Transfer - kinda weird to say only jazz vocal group of the 90's... maybe he meant only group that STARTED in the 90's?
