The New Colony Six

Chicago's New Colony Six originally emerged as a tough, British Invasion-styled outfit prominently featuring Farfisa organ and a novel (at the time) Leslie guitar. Scoring a huge local hit with "I Confess," their early recordings -- exemplified by their 1966 debut album, Breakthrough -- featured first-class original material that gave the sound of Them and the Yardbirds a more commercial, American garage-based, vocal harmony approach. The rest of the '60s saw the band gradually abandoning its roots for middle-of-the-road pop with horns and strings. Continuing to rack up major local hits and minor national ones, they finally cracked the U.S. Top 30 with "Love You So Much" (1968) and "Things I'd Like to Say" (1969). ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

Went from garage rockers to baroque popsters. And were quite good at both. Very good, very underrated band.

One of my favorite lost 45s from the late 60s. Always fun to hear it again and turn people onto it who missed it all these years.

I used to watch Ronnie Rice play live at Lawrence of Oregano in Chicago back in the early 80's.
He knew a 1000 pop/rock songs and could play every one of them on guitar. What a talent! NCS was my favorite group in the sixties.

Remember going to see the NC6 at the Blue Village in Westmont in the late 60s. Also, the Buckinghams and Shadows of Knight. All these great bands were from the west suburbs of Chicago.

Pretty interesting - reviewer has it about right. They moved from a garage rock band to soft rock (think The Association) all within a couple of years. Actually were pretty good at both styles.
