I also needed a little medical attention that was probably around 10 years late, but I worked through it. They can never say I didn't work through the pain, they might say I ran from the pointless ignorance of it all.
At 24 I realized how much of life was a giant gamble, there is the safe way or the norm, and there is the running game and no end in sight. I chose the latter because AI liked the adventure of it all, but things got strange and came to a screeching halt somewhere around 5 years after the fact. Maybe it was a pause for station Identification. Maybe just a break from the acts, or the axe, or the trapdoor.
Now I am an old man. I remember when the Buffalo Springfield came to Boston and played in a small nightclub for all ages. I couldn't afford the $2 cover. The streetcar only cost a nickel or a dime to get there from the suburbs, but money was tight back in the mid-sixties. Oh we'll. I got to party in David Crosby's house in the late 60's. Nobody was home, but his door was always unlocked in the late sixties.
I remember when I was 24 and I heard the song for the first time and I knew it was 1 profound time in my life basically because it's so true. Talk about out of nowhere, Neil Young was there And hehas never left. Take just a second and... think about it.... pretty awesome
Introspective and honest. Two characteristics that make for a well written song. Truth is all I ever sought after. I think its a major part of what makes us curious for the journey.
when I was 24 I really identified with this song. Now that I'm much older I could just replace old Man with Young Man and really identify with this song...........................

Anyone know who played the slide guitar on this track? IMO it makes it the classic it is.
1972? A lot of water under the bridge and over the dam. I have survived it all! This song takes on a whole different meaning for me today. Go figure! Harvest is one of the greatest albums of that era. Thank you Neil Young and KEEP ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD.
I think more of my father and what I might have said to him if i was a gifted as NY...come to think of it I remember calling my dad old man. Hope my son calls me the same.
I'm not an old man so I don't know why he's singing this beautiful song to me but I feel a little like an old man when I enjoy this song but it is well composed and you know sincere but is it art? Is it?
I always loved this song and love it more now. I was out on my patio playing my guitar along with a Neil CD, Prarie Winds. For all you neil fans. That's a recent CD and it's the rust never sleeps Neil, because you never know which Neil your gonna get. but that's what makes him great, he follows the music not our likes and trends, he is a true artist and we are lucky to have him in the world now.
Great production obviously… the recording of Neil's performance from the 1971 Massey Hall Concert is AWESOME as well… in that live recording it was one of the 1st times Neil performed it. So cool to hear the Solo Acoustic live Version and The Produced Band Album Version here from the album 'Harvest'. You can't go wrong with a song like this :) That's what it comes down to.
