Down By The River makes me think of an old girlfriend who Neil somehow didn't manage to kill. What a shame. Everything on Everyone Knows This Is No Where absolutely rocks. Pure genius. Pure simplicity. What a first effort with Crazy Horsr.
Boston tea party, sept '69, his first time in Beantown. Students loved it!
This song talks tp me im a riverrat girlfriend dont like me sing it what niel really talking about or just jaming

Rust never sleeps
That guitar is simply bad a**.
It was a time an era when good music filled our ears and souls. Lyrics that brought people together. Living life carefree ,not knowing the value of the simplicity in our lives. Walking barefoot ,"five-finge r lids" we lived carefree if only we knew then...We had within us deep seeded respect ,for those that drifted and questioned,d e a t h .

The man!!
One of my favorite songs by Neil. So entrancing. A true folk genius. That riff is just amazing...
His lyrics to a lot of songs leave you hanging.
Haunting and one of neil's best. Powerfully strange lyrics!!

be on my side, I'll be on your side, baby
It can be hard for a man to make promises to a woman, when he can't make his own next to impossible dreams come true and whatever past baggage might be dragging him down. We only have so much time to gamble.
What do Down by the River by Neil Young, Plush by Stone Temple Pilots, Burden in my Hand by Soundgarden, and Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix all have in common, besides being loved by me?
@Jeremy Hein, check out the song F@#$' Up by Neil Young. It was grunge before there was grunge.
Some songs seem to put you in the mind of the singer and imagine yourself in a similar situation. Not exactly peaceful easy feeling on this one.
This song reminds of the man living down by the river and you see what happens when the ol laughing lady shows up.
The best of Neil.
This song is awesome and totally hevy! I think all the bands that make heavy rock music nowadays don't understand that the heaviest music doesn't need to have fast guitar riffs, and loud screaming. Take a lesson from Neil

lsocia- I don't think it's literal. I think he's talking about drugs or rather heroin. But that's just my interpretati o n of it.

I much prefer the version by McKendree Spring which, somehow, Pandora has never heard of. Go figure. I started out listening to Pink Floyd and wound up with Dolly big uns Parton!! WTF?
Oh man...I had the original album (Neil Young & Crazy Horse) on vinyl.

Big Bud Double Nickles: Murder ballads go way way WAY back in the folk repertoire. They were supposedly meant to scare young women out of going off along with young men. Like Neil Young. IF ONLY!!
This has always been such a haunting song for me.

Fabulous song...

speaking of hip hop...when the homies & gangstas talk about killing them ho's & b**ches it always sounds so violent. On the other hand, Neil almost makes it sound like a pleasant experience.. . f i r s t asking her to be on his side, then taking his baby down by the river to shoot her dead.

Wow...that opening riff has been sampled in hip hop/trip hop.
I HEARD SOMEONE CALL THIS GUY THE GRANDFATHER OF GRUNGE. INTERESTING PHRASE.
