Mulgrew Miller

An excellent pianist who played in a style influenced by McCoy Tyner, Mulgrew Miller was quite consistent throughout his career. He was with Mercer Ellington's big band in the late '70s and had important stints with Betty Carter (1980), Woody Shaw (1981-1983), and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1983-1986). For a long period, he was a member of the Tony Williams Quintet (1986-1994). In addition, Miller led his own sessions for Landmark (starting in 1985) and Novus. Sadly, Mulgrew Miller died of a stroke in Allentown, Pennsylvania on May 29, 2013; he was 57 years old. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

I agree with Kelsey. When I heard the scales, I thought it was Oscar
I tend to love Mulgrew Miller for his straight-ahe a d approach to jazz. Although they compare him to McCoy Tyner, I disagree. He is very much a somewhat more modern version of Oscar Peterson including Oscar's awesome technique. He is currently appearing in DC this week at the Bohemia Caverns with Ron Carter and Russell Malone (Stryker Trio). Will report back after I hear this group. Also, Mulgrew has played with the talented Anat Cohen (Benny Goodman on Steroids!), and he is the quintessenti a l su
Heard of him, never heard him before today.
Nice touch, beautiful sound... I dig him... Thanks Pandora!!!
From wikipedia: Miller is said to have set his mind definitely to becoming a jazz pianist after seeing Oscar Peterson on television. Much of Mulgrew's playing has the same technical prowess so often connected with Peterson.
There is nothing like hearing him in person. I had the pleasure of hearing him at a "reunion" concert at the U of Memphis where he went to school. WOW!
His style also reminds me of the late great "O.P." Oscar Peterson. I heard him play live a few years ago and the experience was unbelievable ! ! !
How about adding "James Williams". He also worked with "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers". His style is almost like Mulgrew Miller. Please try to add some of James Williams. Thank You.
