Mother's Finest

Georgia funk rock band Mother's Finest might appear to be only a blip on the radar screen of rock history, but not to any of the headlining bands they've stolen shows from -- or any of the audiences who saw it happen. Following in the footsteps of the racially-mixed Sly & the Family Stone, Mother's Finest blended white guitarist Moses Mo and drummer B.B. "Queen" Borden with black vocalists Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock, bassist Wyzard, and keyboardist Mike, for its 1976 self-titled debut album. Tracks like "Rain" and the slightly controversial "Niggazz Can't Sing Rock & Roll" made enough of a ripple to get the band out of Georgia clubs and into regional touring. The follow-up album Another Mother Further lived up to its title. The opening track was a cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team's "Mickey's Monkey," made popular by Smokey Robinson. But the guitar riff was a blatant copy of Jimmy Page's from the Led Zeppelin song "Custard Pie," released two years earlier. Perhaps because the song was a cover, or the fact that they stole from blues legends early in their career, Led Zeppelin never sued and the track (along with others like "Piece of the Rock" and "Hard Rock Lover") helped make Another Mother Further the group's springboard.

For the remainder of the 1970s, Mother's Finest became the most dangerous opening act in rock, blowing away headliners like Aerosmith, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, and Ted Nugent. A subpar third album, 1978's Mother Factor, took nothing away from the band's live performances, as vocalists Murdock -- and particularly the powerful Kennedy -- enthralled audiences over the funk rock backline of Mo, Wizzard, Borden, and Mike. The 1979 album Mother's Finest Live featured not only original staples like "Watch My Stylin'" and "Give You All the Love," but also Kennedy singing a stunning cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" and the musicians shining on a rearranged version of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride." It would prove a last hurrah, for Mother's Finest didn't translate well into the 1980s and never achieved its due in the largely-white world of rock. Mo, Mike, and Borden would leave the band, the latter to go polar-opposite by joining Southern rockers Molly Hatchet, but Kennedy, Murdock and Wyzard fought on. After dabbling in dance music with several different lineups in the 1980s, the trio formed an all-African-American band in the early '90s by recruiting guitarist John Hayes and drummer Dion Derek. The angry, rocking result was the 1992 CD Black Radio Won't Play This Record, which proved prophetic despite being the band's best since its 1979 live album (yet white radio wouldn't play it either). It's now in the cut-out bins; ignored or forgotten -- much like Mother's Finest -- by all except a select few. Still active, the group's latest CD is called Not Yer Mother's Funk -- The Very Best of Mother's Finest, and features mostly material from the first two albums. ~ Bill Meredith, Rovi

FANTASTIC!!! Buy their brand new CD from KICKSTARTER dot com!! MOTHERS FINEST IS THE FINEST!!!
Saw them last weekend and would put them up against anyone in the business. Joyce's voice is exquisite.
Joyce Kennedy, one of the best and most powerful voices in the business.
I have seen them many times from the late 70's until last year at a concert in Woodstock Georgia. . Always awesome! Baby Jean (Joyce) still has one of the best voices live or otherwise. Wyzard & Moses are back along with John Hayes. They have been picking up fans all over Europe for the past few years as well.
I saw them at clemson in 77,one hell of show.

I saw this band for the first time at a roller skating rink in myrtle beach sc in maybe 1976 or 1977, they blew me away. One of the most under rated rock bands of all time in my opinion.

...the 1970s, Mother's Finest became the most dangerous opening act in rock, blowing away headliners like Aerosmith ...

OMG - I was actually THERE the night that happened. Champagne Jam 1979, GA Tech Coliseum.
The whole scenario is impossible to discribe - definitely one of those you-had-to-b e - t h e r e moments in history - every human being still capable of standing up knew we would NEVER see another moment like that for the rest of our lives.
Unfuckingbel i e v a b l e !

Watched them open up for ARS in Chattanooga. Never have enjoyed ARS quite the same after that. MF blew them out of the hall!!!! MF!!!
Saw MF play last Friday (05/11/12) at the Georgia Theater in Athens. This may have been the most high energy show I have ever seen. Loud and rockin', they are not to be missed live. Now go on and play your disco music, I got to rock 'n roll myself all night long.

Haters gonna hate...nothi n ' you can do about that. But those of us who grew up in the Atlanta area during the '70's and early '80's know the truth - MF could rock with anybody.
Why the radio stations especially in Atlanta and the S.E. didn't push Mother's Finest is beyond me! We rockers were going to all of their performances and they truly blew everyone they opened for away! Also, no major record label seemed to want them either--whit e rock only thank you. Regardless of the negative comments, the funk they produced sang true for 95% of those that witnessed it. Great musicians, great sound! Will always love MF.
Seen them new years eve in late 70's with BRICK , and they both BLEW the ROOF OFF the FOX theater.
PLAIN & SIMPLE " ROCK GODS"
I love this band!!! Still see them every chance I get - Baby Love, piece of the Rock - Mikeys Monkey LOVE EM!!!
Pandora, please keep the horrible band off my radio stations.
Saw this band in Philly in the 70's. I think they were opening for Black Sabbath when they got booed off the stage. They were horrible! Please Pandora, no more Mother's Finest! The only line I remeber was "White people say us N... can't play", boy were the white people right.
jkinney2311
I saw MF open for Frank Mariono In Detroit. Franks drummer left the band so BB filled in. It was a great night for music. The bill was MF, Angel, Humble Pie then Mahogany Rush.

My first experience with MF was during Senior Night at Gordon Junior College in the tiny town of Barnesville, GA. That was many moons ago and I will be fan forever. BTW, Barnesville isn't the same either.

Like it's been said, it's not bout where you are from, it's not bout the color of your skin, it's bout where you head is at!!! For Mother's Finest, they rock regardless of who, what or where. To bad biases won't let them have their full due!!!

I love this band! I wore my album out rocking with them in fact I bough Another Mother Further 3 times from being worn out and stolen. It was sad that black radio did not play them and they never got the credit they deserved.
cory.golding
The Allman's got Atlanta hot and ARS gave 'em rhythem but Mother's Finest kept it hopping thru the 70's, that's for sure!
logbuilder45
Had the pleasure of doing 2 weeks opening for them in the early 80's...what a powerhouse band!
I think I saw them on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert in the 70's - 30+ years later I still remember being blown away-That's how good these guys were/are. I would jump at the chance to go see them, but it looks like they concentrate on Europe these days
Mothers' Tours regulary Here and over seas..Go See THEM!
I'm listening to Gone With The Rain. Sounds like a boring, generic AC/DC. Sorry, can't get into it. Maybe it'll catch me with another song.
