Morphine

Morphine is a rarity -- bluesy, bare-bones rock & roll without any guitars. Instead of guitar riffs, the trio relies on sliding two-string basslines, raucous saxophones, and wry, ironically detached vocals. During the mid-'90s, Morphine gained a sizable cult following in America, primarily due to good word of mouth, heavy college airplay, and positive reviews.

Morphine was formed in 1990 by bassist/vocalist Mark Sandman, who had previously played with the bluesy alternative rock band Treat Her Right, and Dana Colley (tenor and baritone saxophone), a former member of the local Boston group Three Colors. Sandman and Colley added drummer Jerome Dupree to complete the lineup. The group released its debut album, Good, on the independent Accurate/Distortion label in 1991; it was reissued on Rykodisc Records in 1992. Good received substantial airplay on American college radio stations, as well as favorable reviews in alternative publications across the country. After the release of Good, Dupree left the band and was replaced by Billy Conway, who had previously played with Sandman in Treat Her Right.

The positive reception to Good set the stage for 1993's Cure for Pain, which received good reviews from a variety of music and mainstream publications upon its spring release. Morphine supported Cure for Pain with an extensive American and European tour that lasted throughout 1994, which helped the album sell over 300,000 copies -- an impressive feat for an independent release. In 1995, Morphine released their third album, Yes, which also received favorable reviews and helped the band sustain its large cult following.

The success of Cure for Pain and Yes also attracted the attention of major record labels, and in late 1996, Dreamworks bought out the majority share of Morphine's contract from Rykodisc. Like Swimming, the group's debut for Dreamworks, was released in the spring of 1997 to generally favorable reviews, yet it failed to break Morphine out of cult status. On July 3, 1999, Sandman collapsed on-stage during a performance in Rome, dying of a heart attack at the age of 46. The Night was posthumously issued early the following year and the live disc Bootleg Detroit appeared in fall 2000. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Trax in Charlottesvi l l e VA 1995-96? with 16 Horsepower. People were crowding around the band so bad when they were trying to play pool that they kept having to ask people to move on every shot. (We were the only ones not bird-dogging them) Mark got so mad he gave up and walked away from the game. On his way backstage he B-lined right past us, he looked right at me, I nodded to him(you know the how are ya doing nod) he nodded back and said, What's up ManReally cool. We miss you so much Mark.
morphine takes me to places I want to stay!

Saw em at ziggys in winston salem one month before he died...we all ate 50 ml of morphine and left a trail of airplane bottles and used condoms in our wake..mr sandman dying was worst thing that has happened in music period...
if you were coming up in the early to mid 90's and were fortunate enough to get tapped into these guys, count your blessings... I was fortunate to see them in 1999 at House of Blues in MB...And as others mentioned, Sandman was just plain cool.

Mark Sandman was largely under my radar in the 90s, but I now consider him to be one of the foremost songwriters of the late 80s and early 90s. He just has this 90s cool guy attitude that will never be replicated because frankly times have changed. He's the James Dean of the two string bass. Cheers Mark, you were a great songwriter and an interesting bass player

There're a big part of my life soundtrack 90's chapter..... . .
I think Mark Sandman's death was a much greater tragedy than that of Kurt Cobain. I miss the hell out of them.
Saw them m first in '98 at Jannus Landing oin St. Pete, FL. Then just saw them with new front man Jeremy Lyons at 2012 New Orleans Jazz Fest. Sounded amazing. They MUST tour again!

I was fortunate enough to see these guys twice including up front in a very small club. I'm not articulate enough to describe how great these shows were. Sad to say, as good as the records are, especially, the live bootleg, they don't even come close.
WARNING: Morphine is addictive.

Underrated amazing music.
RIP??? I think not. This band haunts me still with all the chills, intrigue and yearning fascination of the best ghost story.
Imagine creating your own type of music, have the world discover you not and be able to enjoy your fame and fortune. Mark Sandman you touched my soul RIP
This is the stuff that gives you chills, the stuff of music legend. Double saxes, two string slide bass -- come on !!! Sick, RIP Mark Sandman.
Please don't take away My Good Cognac,Cigar s and Morphine!!
why cant music be like this snymore. music us to be something you didnt do for money or fame but to make something new and incredible, something so big to you that you would want to show everyone in the world that one thing. morphine did that while staying FAR away from the norm snd succeded without letting the mainstream bullshit ruin them.
Best music to have sex to, for sure. The Night, You Look Like Rain, Lets Take a Trip Together, and Cacoon on Sandbox is also great. As Mark Sandman said before, it's F**k Rock.
re-connectin g with morphine - cure for pain. Thursday - hilarious song. The National - surprisingly affecting, Terrible Love is haunting. Nothing like extreme emotion to restore music's transcendent power.
SOOOO GOOD.
Addicted to Morphine
lo-fi rock blues at its best.
I never get enough, after all these years.
Easily one of the greatest bands of all time.
Sexy, cool.
raphaellorr
what happy jazz
Saw them at the Blue Note in Columbia MO around '98. Sandman had a seperate mic run through several effects (distortion/ r e v e r b / e t c . ) and warned the crowd that whatever came through that mic was a manifestatio n of the collective subconscious . What an incredible/f r i g h t e n i n g / a w e s o m e / r e a l i t y - b e n d i n g show.
smiraglia33
these guys are just awesome. sandman's solo stuff is good, but not as good. The reincarnatio n of Morphine, A.K.A.C.O.D. is a poor immitation.

I was blessed to see Morphine one summer at the Central Square World's fair. I came out of the T and heard that sax, low bass sound. It's been over 10 years and I can still see Marc on stage. He is the reason I picked up the bass. Amazing music. Wishing Well one of the greatest songs of all time. 11 o'clock,,,,b r i l l i a n t . . . .

Talked with the band side stage at First Ave. in Minneapolis in '93 or '94. Very cool folk. It's sad that it ended so early.
stellarviole t
saw them @ Central Square World Fair just weeks before Sandman's death; he's been a favorite of mine since the early days of "Treat Her Right" and I miss him to this day...
wow !!!!! first chane to listen to morphine.... "I had my chance" good song, I hope to hear more nice sax work !
izzybat
great band great sound
what else is there to say?
Mark Sandman died (1999) a few years after I started getting into them. Saw a video of "You Speak My Language/Hon e y White" and fell in love. Mark's smooth voice just engulfs you. And that freaked out 2 string bass guitar he created.
The drummer starts out slow but slick then picks up the beat egging Mark on. And the sax man. Love when it screams "Brenda" with Mark. Sometimes he plays tenor & baritone sax at the same time. Bass, drums, baritone sax and Marks baritone voice created THEIR vibe.
Anyone who wants to, Go to my profile and check out Radio Chillage. it started as my Morphine station like a year and a half ago. I've been tuning it ever since. Love to hear comments

Cure for Pain is one of the finest discs I own. In 94 I came back to the US and was taken to a bar to hear a band out of NC that my buddy said had a helluva lot of potential. Next door at Lupo's I saw that Morphine was playing and I mentioned it to my buddy but he said "Nah, let's check out the other band." I screwed up. I went to a helluva good show and was amazed along w/ 200 others but missed out on my only chance to see Morphine. But hell, Dave Matthews was pretty good that night...
