I was a Monkee's fan as a kid - my older brother thought they were bubble gum - he was into Beatles, Cream, Hendricks, etc. One day I came home to find my Monkee's LP in a noose hanging in my bedroom. Funny guy.

Clarksville, Tennessee is right next to Fort Campbell, Kentucky (they are practically connected), which is home to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). The 101st had a major role in the Vietnam war, so the rumors about this song being either a protest song, or simply a song about a soldier trying to see his girl one last time, seem to be valid to me.
I heard this song the day of its world premier on WLS sitting in my mom's car when I was in the 4th grade. I was thrilled and became an immediate fan. The Monkees best tunes hold up quite well.
