Piano player Monguito Santamaria recorded a series of LPs for Fania during the late '60s and early '70s that earned notice for their bass-heavy grooves and anthemic status for Latin soul fans. The son of Afro-Cuban conga hero Mongo Santamaria (and not to be confused with the vocalist Monguito who recorded with Johnny Pacheco), Monguito Santamaria grew up in New York surrounded by music, especially while his father played in Tito Puente's orchestra during the '50s. He also studied music and made a few recordings while at Brooklyn College. Name recognition undoubtedly helped him get a contract with Fania, but his late-'60s LPs, Hey Sister and Black Out, were some of the best in the Latin soul style sweeping the scene during that era. Still, he released only one more LP, 1974's En Una Nota!. ~ John Bush, Rovi
WOW,I'm going to go back to Lucho's Bar in Flushing Avein Bklyn with Blackie RIP,Tamango,Luis EL DISEÑADOR,Ruben y Pat el ecuatoriano.Great memories.Dios los bendiga a todos!!
Mongo's son is truly talented and original. Like his father, Monguito surrounds himself with movers, shakers and innovators. His recordings are collector items, and his sound is so hip and nostalgic.

There is Mongo and then there is Monguito...

Thanks for the clarification Paredes. I do have to say that the Pandora project is awesome as I am a panamanian and hard salsa lover who lived in the NY/NJ metro area right smack in the midle of the salsa explosion of the 1970's.
This is not the correct artist. This is the second time I have pointed this out. The picture/bio is of Mongo Santamaria, the great percussionist. This is Monguito Santamaria, his nephew, the piano player who had a few albums during the late 70's/early 80's. If you need help in the Latin Music field, please inform me. I have produced documentaries for PBS and NPR, had various radio shows, and publish magazines.
