Minus The Bear

With catchy song titles like "Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked," "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!," and "Lemurs, Man, Lemurs," it's hard not to be at least a little bit curious about this Seattle-based quintet. Featuring members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, Minus the Bear emerged on Seattle's music scene in 2001 with the release of their six-song EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic. The band comprised guitarist Dave Knudson, vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider, drummer Erin Tate, and bassist Cory Murchy. Though the bandmembers entered the studio before they ever played a show, they toured aggressively in support of the EP, then returned to the studio to record 2002's Highly Refined Pirates, their first full-length album. Both the EP and LP were released by Seattle-based Suicide Squeeze Records.

Though the song titles may lead one to believe that they're a novelty act, Minus the Bear provide polished, shrewdly arranged songs. Finger-tapped guitar riffs mixed with catchy melodies and unexpected time changes keep listeners interested and entertained. Minus the Bear issued two EPs in 2004: Bands Like It When You Yell "Yar!" at Them on Suicide Squeeze and They Make Beer Commercials Like This on Arena Rock. Their next full-length, the self-produced Menos el Oso (Spanish for Minus the Bear), appeared in August 2005; the remix album Interpretaciones del Oso followed in early 2007. The band released the full-length Planet of Ice later that year. In 2009 the band went into the studio with My Morning Jacket producer Joe Chiccarelli, and the following year released the album Omni through Dangerbird Records. Their fifth album, Infinity Overhead, followed on the label in 2012. Two years later Minus the Bear returned with Lost Loves, a B-sides and rarities collection featuring songs culled from the recording sessions of their previous three studio albums. ~ Laurel Greenidge, Rovi

Some people don't know what talent is. Those people obviously don't know MTB. No gimmicks here, just great unique music! GO MINUS THE BEAR, GO!

Mtb have done something greatly under-apprec i a t e d in modern music. That is, put differences to indefference s aside and PRODUCe their sound and let us comment or judge and suit it.....
Yes, these guys are mad geniuses, that aren't even mad. Such a clever virtuosic group of stars.
Ohhh and they're excellent! I've seen them live three times =D great times with great music and a great crowd
A comment as far as the biography goes... just gonna say ya can't forgot about Alex on keyboard, (he was sadly not mentioned)

Vocals sound like asa from the junior varsity, great stuff!
We love them here in Denver, like the prog-rock feel guitar and drums with the nice melodies, good keys and chill vocals that are tongue in cheek :)~ We have a chance to see three shows in the next two months here...

Jake Snider's voice is probably my favorite ever. Will aways be one of my favorite bands.
These Guys are f**king awesome live!!!
Greatest. Band. Ever.
Love it!!
Minus the Bear will always rule. They so chillll, tellin' stories
This band sucks
They may have just not wanted to do a live album. They are an excellent live band, so good in fact that I bought their album (Menos el Oso) after seeing their first thee songs. Also, live albums are lame. Never recorded well. If I want to hear a band live, I'll go to their concerts.
I think you mean the weeknd is a black version of minus the bears singer. Minus the bear existed before the weeknd. The weeknd sucks btw.
i like that this white dude sings about chicks doing cocaine. sorta like a white version of the Weeknd. definitely one of my favorite bands.
you complainers re: my comments...w h y do you think there is no live album?!!? Face it, these guys are music-techno l o g y ninjas!!

And yes, I have all their releases, the shirt and am look fwd to the next release.
sooo good!
last tour thru MTB was $5. Now it is $25. I still kinda want my 5 back from last time. Can't say show was bad, but I wouldn't throw another 5er at it! And surely, not $25.
See you on Oct 30th

First introduced to these guys when they used to tour with Piebald way back in the day. KILLER live show. Dave Knudson is basically my idol.

Seeing MTB for the 4th time later this month at Firestone Orlando. Minus the Bear, MuteMath and Modest Mouse comprise the Triple M of best bands around right now!

you have to see minus live it'll make you love them more
When I make the claim that Minus the Bear is one of my top 5 favorite bands, it's a statement that does not come lightly. My "serious-abo u t - m u s i c " friend introduced me to them in 2008 and it has been love ever since. I haven't seen them in concert yet but I own all of their albums and hopefully when they are in Los Angeles Oct. 22 I will be there in the front row.
daveski222
Fist time I've heard them. They are an awesome sound! They sound like so many other great artists from the Seattle Area but different! yet some of the vocals reminds me of "Toad the Wet Sprocket" a little. Kurtis Hill your lucky: ( I would really like to see these guys live.
Just saying, Joe Chiccarelli is a douche bag. Regardless, Minus the Bear is amazing.
saw them live in lawrence, ks..front row - love the music :D
Totally awesome and sound best live!
