Minus The Bear

With catchy song titles like "Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked," "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!," and "Lemurs, Man, Lemurs," it's hard not to be at least a little bit curious about this Seattle-based quintet. Featuring members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, Minus the Bear emerged on Seattle's music scene in 2001 with the release of their six-song EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic. The band comprised guitarist Dave Knudson, vocalist/ guitarist Jake Snider, drummer Erin Tate, and bassist Cory Murchy. Though the band entered the studio before they ever played a show, they toured aggressively in support of the EP, then returned to the studio to record 2002's Highly Refined Pirates, their first full-length album. Both the EP and LP were released by Seattle-based Suicide Squeeze Records.

Though the song titles may lead one to believe that they're a novelty act, Minus the Bear provides polished, shrewdly arranged songs. Finger-tapped guitar riffs mixed with catchy melodies and unexpected time changes keep listeners interested and entertained. Minus the Bear issued two EPs in 2004: Bands Like It When You Yell "Yar!" at Them on Suicide Squeeze and They Make Beer Commericals Like This on Arena Rock. Their next full-length, the self-produced Menos el Oso (Spanish for Minus the Bear), appeared in August 2005; the remix album Interpretaciones del Oso followed in early 2007. The band released the full-length Planet of Ice later that year. In 2009 the band went into the studio with My Morning Jacket producer Joe Chiccarelli, and the following year released the album Omni through Dangerbird Records. Their fifth album, Infinity Overhead, followed on the label in 2012. ~ Laurel Greenidge, Rovi

Vocals sound like asa from the junior varsity, great stuff!
We love them here in Denver, like the prog-rock feel guitar and drums with the nice melodies, good keys and chill vocals that are tongue in cheek :)~ We have a chance to see three shows in the next two months here...

Favorite band, can't wait to see them on the 17th

These Guys are f**king awesome live!!!
Greatest. Band. Ever.
Love it!!
Minus the Bear will always rule. They so chillll, tellin' stories
This band sucks
They may have just not wanted to do a live album. They are an excellent live band, so good in fact that I bought their album (Menos el Oso) after seeing their first thee songs. Also, live albums are lame. Never recorded well. If I want to hear a band live, I'll go to their concerts.
I think you mean the weeknd is a black version of minus the bears singer. Minus the bear existed before the weeknd. The weeknd sucks btw.
i like that this white dude sings about chicks doing cocaine. sorta like a white version of the Weeknd. definitely one of my favorite bands.
you complainers re: my comments...w h y do you think there is no live album?!!? Face it, these guys are music-techno l o g y ninjas!!

And yes, I have all their releases, the shirt and am look fwd to the next release.
sooo good!
last tour thru MTB was $5. Now it is $25. I still kinda want my 5 back from last time. Can't say show was bad, but I wouldn't throw another 5er at it! And surely, not $25.
See you on Oct 30th
bad a**(: i f**ks with it hard for real. f**kin genious

Real music fans listen to MTB. That's why I'm hoping you can help me win tickets to Lollapalooza by getting the most thumbs up on my music video! If you've got a quick second, one click is all it takes to make my dream come true.

First introduced to these guys when they used to tour with Piebald way back in the day. KILLER live show. Dave Knudson is basically my idol.
the official indie rock band of the fantasy focus 06010 podcast
Seeing MTB for the 4th time later this month at Firestone Orlando. Minus the Bear, MuteMath and Modest Mouse comprise the Triple M of best bands around right now!

Love, love, love this band! Saw them live in a small venue in Seattle recently. It was simply amazing.

you have to see minus live it'll make you love them more
When I make the claim that Minus the Bear is one of my top 5 favorite bands, it's a statement that does not come lightly. My "serious-abo u t - m u s i c " friend introduced me to them in 2008 and it has been love ever since. I haven't seen them in concert yet but I own all of their albums and hopefully when they are in Los Angeles Oct. 22 I will be there in the front row.

Fist time I've heard them. They are an awesome sound! They sound like so many other great artists from the Seattle Area but different! yet some of the vocals reminds me of "Toad the Wet Sprocket" a little. Kurtis Hill your lucky: ( I would really like to see these guys live.
Just saying, Joe Chiccarelli is a douche bag. Regardless, Minus the Bear is amazing.
saw them live in lawrence, ks..front row - love the music :D
Totally awesome and sound best live!

Absolutely Sick Band! One of the best bands of our time! Acoustic album is one of the most intense musical experiences you can have, I highly recommend it!

Very good band

Minus the Bear has continued to amaze me throughout the years. I recently saw them in concert in Lawrence, KS and it was one of, no...the best live show i've seen to date (by them and other bands) I cannot wait for their new album (which they've finished recording!) to come in 2010. Hands down, MTB is my favorite DIY band out there. The acoustic album is pure amazing as well!
awesome music
great artist, highly recommend anything by them. WIsh i had all of their albums

I caught a whiff of these guys back shortly after They Make Beer Commercials Like This, and somehow forgot about them.
Then, about 2 and a half years ago, re-discovere d them and have been totally hooked ever since.
I kind of like their work before Planet of Ice better, but it's nice to see them continuing to change and develop as they go.

They tend to play smaller shows, but from what I've seen, they're great in concert.
when r they comming out with a new cd!!
Is that really all yo have to say about minus the bear in their description? Minus the Bear is one of the greatest bands to come out of the 2000's. They are a success story like no other. But, I guess all the description has to say is they released albums (which by the way, every single one of them are incredible). Talk about that in their description.
