Russian composer Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) is the father of Russian Nationalism. Born to a wealthy family, Glinka was well educated and studied music in Germany. His contact with Pushkin and Gogol awakened Glinka to the possibility of expressing Russia's national spirit in music. Glinka realized this goal primarily in two grand, Russian language operas: A Life for the Tsar (1836) and Ruslan and Lyudmila (1842). Glinka is also known for his orchestral piece Kamarinskaya (1848) and the song cycle Farewell to St. Petersburg (1840). Glinka's influence on the Russian "Mighty Handful" was immense, but only Balakirev had any direct contact with him. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
