Michael Johnson

Stylistically, singer/songwriter Michael Johnson has been all over the map, ranging from folk to pop and soft rock to country. But no matter what kind of music he recorded, he maintained a mellow, pleasant tone that served as his hallmark. Johnson was born in Alamosa, CO, in 1944 and started playing the guitar as a teenager, studying both rock & roll and jazz. At 21, he traveled to Barcelona and studied classical guitar with Graciano Tarrago for a year, then returned to the U.S. and joined the later version of the folk group the Chad Mitchell Trio (when John Denver was a member). Initially signing to Atco, Johnson released his first album, There Is a Breeze, in 1973 and displayed a gentle, folk-influenced sound. He recorded three more albums for smaller labels in the mid-'70s, gradually transforming into more of a soft rock artist, and signed with EMI in 1978 in that capacity. He scored a number one hit on the adult contemporary charts that year with "Bluer Than Blue," which almost made the pop Top Ten, and also made the adult contemporary Top Five with 1978's "Almost Like Being in Love" and 1979's "This Night Won't Last Forever." Johnson recorded five albums in all for EMI and in 1985 moved over to RCA, where he adopted a contemporary country style that stayed compatible with his soft, mellow leanings. He was surprisingly successful, scoring a total of five Top Ten country hits from 1986-1989, including the chart-toppers "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder." After three country albums on RCA, Johnson moved over to Atlantic in 1991, which effectively halted his commercial momentum. He recorded very sporadically in the '90s for smaller labels. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

It's a great treat to see him performing locally (in Minneapolis) , usually at the Dakota Jazz Club downtown. Great stage presence, dazzling complexity of his guitar chords, a mesmerizing voice and a gentle stage humor that is both self-depreca t i n g and inclusive of his audience. A gem.
My Favorite Album (CD) from Michael Johnson was Home Free, reminds me of the time I spent in Australia

Micheal Johnson is one of the very best musicians around. I'm lucky to live in Minnesota and still get a chance to see him play once in awhile. He has a great stage presence and his guitar work is superb. His voice transports me back to my youth.

I love all his music from the Early Years albums through Then&Now, Departure up to his newest Moonlit Deja Vu. I want to hear more of his stuff on my Michael Johnson station!
The songs from the Early Years albums, There is a Breeze/For All you Mad Musicians were cult like in the 70's in the midwest as we recorded them onto cassettes, shared and sang them constantly and tried to figure out the guitar tabulations (something he politely stated he would not make available). His early music is a constant, treasured source of inspiring, inexhaustibl e joy. It has changed my life.
Love this song from the first listen...cir c a 79!

I've been listening to Michael since the 70's and have always loved his music. One of the most under-rated artists around. I'm incredibly jealous of all you who have had the opportunity to see him in concert. Maybe some day, I hope.

Saw him in multiple concerts in Minnesota in the 70's, then had a chance to meet him a couple years ago.

Have always been drawn to his music.
easy to like this breezy style, hook filled songs and gituar riffs. Reminds me of Kenny Rankin.

I've seen Michael Johnson twice, in small venues here in Spokane, Wash., and he is one of the best musicians on the planet. He's also funny, self-effacin g , and a great crowd-please r . I'd love to see him again, and it's a great pleasure to hear him on Pandora.

strangely enough some artists are really not noted and or forgotten, not even being related to a song that they wrote.
My wife and I fell in love with Michael's music in the late 1980's when he lived in Nashville, playing the Exit Inn, the Bluebird, and "nooners," at nearby MTSU. Even today, if he is playing within a 200 mile radius, we will change any plans and drive to see him. Heard him last Christmas(20 0 8 ) i n Asheville,NC in a small, but fun, venue with his son,(also quite the musician). Wish he played more on the mid-East coast!!! A super talent.
I saw Michael Johnson at Musikfest (a huge music festival in Bethlehem PA) about 10 years ago and instantly fell in love. It was without question the best concert I have every seen. He is honest, believable, and his passion shows in his music. I would love the opportunity to see him perform once more in my life, then I could die a happy lady.

In 1990 when I was an undergraduat e at University of Idaho, Michael Johnson performed on campus in a small concert hall. There were no more than 100 people there. To this day, it is one of the most memorable concerts I ever had the privilege to attend. What a classic, talented and layed back artist. I will never get tired of listening to his lyrics or voice.
SAW JOHNSON IN CONCERT TWICE,HE ALWAYS PUT ON A GOOD SHOW WITH HIS MANY SONGS,HE HAS A GREAT VOICE,SOFT BUT VERY EASY TO LISTEN TO,HE PERFORMED ONCE AT A COUNTY FAIR IN OREGON,THERE WERE VERY FEW PEOPLE AT THE CONCERT,IT DID NOT PHASE HIM,HE PERFORMED FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR..HE CAN REALLY PLAY AS WELL..
My favorite is "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder" I think Micheal Johnson is a Great Singer & I like all of his songs. I got to see him in person when he was in my town. Lily A.
