Formed Seattle in 1982, Metal Church consisted of vocalist David Wayne, guitarists Kurdt Vanderhoof and Craig Wells, bassist Duke Erickson, and drummer Kirk Arrington. Their 1985 self-titled debut album, recorded when the thrash/speed metal genre was still evolving, made a huge splash on the scene, as did its similar follow-up, The Dark. However, the band really hit its stride when Wayne left and was replaced by Mike Howe on 1989's Blessing In Disguise; Vanderhoof left after the album due to his dislike of touring and was replaced by Metallica guitar tech John Marshall. Vanderhoof remained the group's designated composer on 1991's The Human Factor, possibly the band's most socially conscious album. However, the advent of alternative rock and problems with their record label contributed to a loss of direction on 1993's Hanging in the Balance, and Metal Church ended up disbanding. In 1999, the group's original lineup -- Wayne, Vanderhoof, Wells, Erickson, and Arrington -- reunited and released the album Masterpeace. Live appeared early the following year. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
However. You are right 80's, rule. Slayer was pretty good. But far from who they "should" have been.

Tut. Sorry Craig. Slayer doesn't still rule. Catch someone still kicking a** like Megadeth. Now they still rule. Slayer is a fraction of what the were. Sounds like you smoked your good taste awyay in the 80's. Along with the slayer guys... who still live.
I have to disagree, real metalheads know the first two albums were classics when mike took over vocals metal church were only a shadow of the David Wayne years, I mean David really was underrated
Awesome band I just hated when they went thrash. The singer has a beautiful voice . I wish he sung as gracefully in,all there songs as they did there first album.
david wayne AND mike howe!!! legends, most underrated metal act ever

Totally agree with tosting23. David Wayne's voice is a metal classic and Reverend really kicked a**! I was extremely disappointed when Reverend canceled a show they were scheduled for in Fort Lauderdale in approx. 1991. I had tix and showed up but they didn't...major bummer...anyway, long live Metal Church in the Wayne era!

The band really hit it's stride when Wayne left....I stopped reading right there. It should read the band became a different band with a new singer after Wayne left and while still very good, Metal Church was never the same without Wayne. The two Reverend albums with David Wayne blow away the 3 Metal Church albums with Howe. Still good, but not nearly as good. Sorry.
The Dark was my first album from these guys and probibly like my 5th album in general(Piece of Mind was my 1st). Ton of Bricks was my anthem, that song kicked a** for you, you didn't even need to throw a punch. Just play that song on a "boom box" at a brawl and you're the last man standing without even sweating. I miss the late 80's just for the Metal.
ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED METAL MONSTERS EVER.I'M GLAD TO HAVE MEET THEM!

This Biography needs to be updated.Afte r another long period of inactivity (during which time both Vanderhoof and Wayne worked on solo projects), a largely new lineup got together and recorded 2003's The Weight Of The World with Ronny Munroe and since then recorded two more albums. After a lengthy run, they finally decided to break up in June 2009. David Wayne passed away in a Car Accident May 2005 .
Holy crap they have an album past the 80s. That's crazy. I saw them when they were in their prime when I was ten and I was unimpressed with them. I listened to them now, and they really pale to such bands as Slayer, Immortal, Gogoroth, and Behemoth.

I love post-NWOBHM pre-thrash metal like this. Excellent!
Who hired you guys? Metal Church under David Wayne was Much better than the incarnetion that occured during Howe's tenure. Though I loved blessing in disguise, the 1st album and their Gold Record The Dark will forever remain groundbreakers! Want further proof of Wayne's Genious? Do the staff (and the fans) a favor and add some REVEREND (90's Outfit with Wayne).
You will never find a better rendition of Fortunate Son! And that is the method to my madness.
I for one will truly miss Metal Church, I have been listening to them since I was like 6 yrs. old and have always had alot of respect for the way they just kept on going with no airplay or support. They will go down as everything real about metal and their legacy lives in their music and that speaks for itself. I wish these guys nothing but great things in their life after music but I will always cherish the memory of seeing them live with anthrax back in the late 80's, what a great performance.
I can't tell you how upset I am to be the one to break the news that yesterday Metal Church announced that they are "calling it quits". Though their German based label(SVT) recently announced that they are going to have to close their doors indefinitly the band reassured everyone that the labels destruction has absolutly nothing to do with their demise. They made the remark that it has always been a struggle to keep the band up and going and now its time to just cut it loose and move on.

The discography is missing: The Human Factor (one of my favorites)
