Danish band featuring vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, bassist Timi Hansen, and drummer Kim Ruzz. Mercyful Fate won a large cult following thanks to their dramatic lyrics, showing a Gothic obsession with evil and the occult, and Diamond's amazing vocal range, which shifted from a low growl to a banshee scream, plus the interplay of Shermann and Denner. The band broke up after two full-length albums owing to differences of opinion about what direction the group should take (Shermann wanted a more commercial approach). Diamond pursued a solo career in the mid-'80s. In 1993, the group reformed its original lineup, with the exception of Ruzz (King Diamond drummer Snowy Shaw joined instead). The initial results were quite successful, as the group seemed to pick up right where it left off, much to the delight of their fans. Hansen left after the first reunion record, In the Shadows, and was replaced by Sharlee D'Angelo on its 1994 follow-up Time; drummer Shaw's place was taken by Bjarne T. Holm for 1996's Into the Unknown. Dead Again followed in 1998, as did further lineup shifts; original member Denner called it quits, and the band recruited Mike Wead to take his place on guitar. This lineup remained in place for 1999's 9. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
King Diamond has always had the best musicians possible!! So underrated as an artist. I always thought that one of his albums might be made into a movie.....which Them would have been incredible!
As always every time I hear the kings voice, those tingling goose bumps appear as though they never left. I saw them back in 85 for the first time and was hooked! Rock the f*** on!
Love King Diamond and Mercyful Fate! I thought it was funny that Eddie Trunk didn't know King's real name, when That Metal Show played Stump the Trunk.
have always known about them/him n how important to metal they are. But in the last couple of yrs have been really getting into n i dont know why i waited so long. Amazing!
I SHOOK KING'S HAND 20 TIMES ONCE. ALSO, HANK SHERMAN, MICHEAL DENNER, AND SHARLEE D ANGELO. THEY ARE FREAKIN COOL. DON'T MESS WITH THE BEST METAL BAND OF ALL TIME.

I saw KD in Grand Rapids Michigan on his Them tour with DRI and Flotsam and Jetsom.. The show kicked a**! KD is a true master of the musical arts!
I've been listening to Mercyful Fate since oh I don't know maybe 83 or so. I'm HARD CORE MF/KD. The sad thing is I've never seen a show. They don't allow Satanist's in Utah, TOO MANY FRIGGING MORMON'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mikkey Dee was King Diamonds drummer when he went solo. Snowy Shaw played on the album, The Eye, after Mikkey left the band. Anyhow, Diamond rocks. Love the live shows!
I saw this band in portland, Oregon at the Starry Night off of Burnside this band is Evil with a capital (E) maybe because that night i dropped couple of hits of Acid that night and opened a Door! with the music they were playing i ended up leaving after about the 8th song i thought i saw, well the (Beast) and he was Singing....yep he was!!
It's over, what band can claim that they are on the same level as the original members of this band. Technicality, passion, and skill are off the charts!!!
Stevie Moon you are exactly right, you are not a TRUE metalhead unless you are cranking Mercyful fate and King Diamond up in your system, great music made by a bunch of great guys. Speaking of Hank Sherman I recently listened to that 'Demonica' project he is doing and even that is friggin awesome, I guess when your one of the best you just can't do wrong.

Hank Sherman and Michael Denner. Two of the most compelling guitarists that worked together like Dave Murray and Adrian Smith of Maiden. And King, ah King. That voice. Parents are fortunate that they cannot understand what he is saying. Melissa, Dont Break the Oath are my two favorite albums. Of course Nuns have no Fun is just charming. If you are a real metal head, you have to dip into this band. Incredible.

One of the best Black-Metal Bands, no, THE BEST Black Metal Band I've ever listened to!!!!!!!!
This Band ranks #1 to me within the Black-Metal genre and Venom comes in at #2. Whenever I need to relax I listen to them to calm down so I don't "Break-Stuff" as Limp Bizket so correctly described a generation. :)
