Melody Gardot

The story of vocalist Melody Gardot is as remarkable as any who perseveres against abject adversity. Born in New Jersey in 1985, she took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock, and pop music. At age 19 she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. But, on a fateful day, while riding her bicycle, the driver of a Jeep made an illegal turn, hurtling into Gardot and leaving her in the street for dead. As she lay hospitalized for months with multiple head injuries and pelvic fractures, her love for music was the best therapy she could receive. While in her hospital bed, she wrote and recorded songs that would become the EP Some Lessons. Upon her eventual release from intensive care, Gardot found the strength and determination to further her career as an artist. Blessed with a beautiful voice and grand insight as a songwriter, her cognitive powers slowly but surely became pronounced, leading to the independent recording and release of her debut CD, Worrisome Heart, which was reissued in 2007 by the Verve label. Her music could be described as a cross between Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, and Shania Twain, but goes deeper than mere pop convention. Gardot is hypersensitive to light and noise, thus she wears dark glasses, and uses a cane to walk. On-stage she requires a special seating unit, and wears a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator, a TENS device, to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain. As amazing as her story is, what is more evident is that she possesses a blue style and persona that reflect not only her afflictions, but conversely the hope and joy of making personalized music that marks her as an individual and original. Though touring is difficult, she has been performing in major cities on the East Coast to support her recordings. In 2009, working with producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza -- both known for their work with Joni Mitchell -- Gardot followed up her Verve debut with My One and Only Thrill. Gardot returned in 2012 with her third studio album, The Absence, featuring production from guitarist/composer Heitor Pereira.

Gardot altered her musical direction when she returned to the recording studio. She reteamed with Klein, and focused on music strongly influenced by R&B, blues, and jazz in a set of original, socially conscious songs. Her first single/video, "Preacherman," was inspired by the death of Emmet Till. The second, "It Gonna Come," was released as a docu-video a week prior to the album. The full-length, Currency of Man, was released by Decca in June of 2015. ~ Michael G. Nastos

What a dramatic story. So glad she recovered & is making gorgeous music despite her physical struggles. Thank you, Ms. Gardot for music that takes me back to the 50's & early 60's. Poor People of Paris is one of many tunes from that era with distinctive European flair. Almos kitchy, never cutesy & I like the extended instrumental breaks. There's just not enough music without lyrics these days. Great find, Pandora, thanks a lot.

1) One of the great talents of our or any other age.
2) As a cyclist who has had only near-misses so far, her song Some Lessons rings in my ears whenever I am riding.
3) Her perseverance in the face of such adversity should be an inspiration to all of us.
4) I can't get enough & her music never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

All I can say do is give tremendous thanks to Pandora. I would never have known Ms. Melody Gardot otherwise. I just heard her song "Worrisome Heart" for the first time (never heard her name before now) and it was LOVE AT FIRST LISTEN for me...and her story, I mean damn. You really gotta love her perseverance and her voice as an artist now really pulls weight. Again, thanks Pandora!

Does anyone remember the Monterey Peninsula circa 1971? I was a tiny observer... didn't know what was happening, but knew it was important... I've been mining that vein ever since...

First thing is I like your sound and voice. I watched and listened to your video about the homeless. I have been exposed in NYC since 14 going to school to homeless people. As Charlie said he chose this life and no matter what everyone does, its like a disease with no cure. Do you think good hearted folks have not tried and tried with temporary success and losing at the end. Its like drugs they have to want to help themselves. Just a thought.
Good luck with your music.

If you read these comments I have walked in your shoes. I too have neuro-stimul a t o r placed in 2011.
There is a new treatment if your My Stim is not doing all it was cracked up to be. It is called a Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) therapy. Call Dr Jonathan Carlson, Arizona Pain Clinic, Phoenix, AZ. He is listed on the Internet.
Once I head you had a neuro stimulator I identified with you and immediately fell in love with music.
Good luck, stay out of pain. Rr

Melody, if you read these comments, you are such an inspiration to everyone. So many others would have just given up on life, after your accident. Not only did you not give up, you persevered, and pulled yourself through. So I can imagine just the physical pain alone, that you must have endured. What a strong woman you are. And not only that, but now you are also sharing your gorgeous voice and music, with the world, lifting all of us up. God bless you.
