Mbilia Bel's career took off in the mid-'80s when she sang alongside Tabu Ley on a number of recordings and tours, also recording solo albums at the same time. After her first child was born, she took some time off and decided to part company with Ley, making one last album with him in 1987. She moved to Paris and hooked up with guitarist Rigo Star, who composed and arranged much of her material. Most of her lyrics revolve around themes of adult love, which has proven controversial on some occasions. She toured the U.S., U.K., and West Africa from 1989 to 1990, drawing enthusiastic crowds. More recently, she has taken to experimenting within the traditional rumba/soukous framework, mixing in rap and other elements, with mixed results. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
This music takes me back to those years when life was so wonderful and the outside world had not invaded our sphere. In Sierra Leone we danced to all the songs from Africa regardless of language and country of origin. I feel so sad for our kids who do not know what Africa was all about in those days. Thanks for the songs that bring such wonderful memories.
Mom used to listen to her everyday but now we are together anymore..... So my point is that I start listening to her so it can remind me of my mother <3
What a riotous time the 80s were and growing up to the sounds of Franco and T.P. O.K Jazz, Sam Mangwana, Tabu Ley and of course the Queen herself, Mbilia Abel! Life was simple and growing up was and experience worth going through especially with the intoxicated environment of melodious African tunes. Yeah, what a period, what a time!
