An articulate songwriter with a versatile and gritty tenor voice -- a combination that has drawn comparisons to everyone from Jeff Buckley to Leonard Cohen -- Matthew Perryman Jones has the touch of a poet and the narrative reach of a short story writer, making the best of his songs deeply resonant. Jones began playing out in 1997, debuting at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA, but he soon relocated to Nashville. In 2000 he released Nowhere Else But Here followed by an EP, For the Road, in 2003. Released in 2006, Throwing Punches in the Dark was produced by Neilson Hubbard and met with high critical praise, with songs from the set appeared on the soundtracks to the television shows The Hills and Eli Stone. Jones re-teamed with Hubbard for Swallow the Sea, which was released in 2008. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
Well, it suffices that he has a really good voice as well as great songwriting talent. ;)

This will settle the debate. He sounds like a mash up of Bono and Rufus Wainright. Also, if you haven't listened to his latest album, Land of the Living, you are doing yourself a major disservice. Go and purchase is right now!

I think he sounds just like Ryan Adams. Every time this song comes on I think it's Ryan Adams again. And I enjoy it immensely.
Huh, I guess we'll all just have to slug it out forever, 'cause I also hear a similarity to Bono. Come on, it's so subjective - he doesn't sound exactly like Bono, but neither does he sound NOTHING like him. I think the point we're all trying to make is that Matt sounds GOOD. Those who like U2 are just trying to pay him a compliment by the comparison.

that's like saying fresh apple pie tastes like a pop tart.
wish Pandora would list all other vocalists and musicians and release dates... is it NH singing with MPJ?

His song 'beneath the silver moon' is the first of his work I've ever heard, and it penetrated right to the center of my sensibilities, echoing a connection I can only describe as "YES"...
That is a good call J. I thought it was a new U2 song when "Refuge" came on my station. Comparing him to Leonard Cohen is a stretch. A little poppy for that.
