Matt Pond PA

Although originally formed as a chamber pop quintet, matt pond PA went through several different lineups throughout its existence, with each incarnation revolving around the talents of singer/songwriter Matt Pond (previously of Mel's Rockpile). Pond formed the group upon relocating from New England to Philadelphia, and he filled out his first lineup with guitarist/bassist Josh Kramer, cellist Jim Hostetter, violinist Rosie McNamara-Jones, and drummer Sean Byrne. The band debuted in 1998 with Deer Apartments and won top honors in an unsigned bands competition sponsored by online retailer CDNOW. A sophomore effort, Measure, followed in 2000 and garnered comparisons to a stripped-down version of the Cure, while the I Thought You Were Sleeping EP appeared in spring 2001. By the next year, the band shifted its roster to include drummer Mike Kennedy, bassist Matt Raisch, guitarist Jim Kehoe, and cellist Eve Miller, alongside Pond and Hostetter. A third album (and the band's first release for the Polyvinyl label), The Green Fury, was released in spring 2002 while Pond also took on duties writing music for the Oxygen Network. The Nature of Maps followed several months later, marking the band's third release in two years.

In 2003, Pond relocated to Brooklyn and began piecing together the strongest lineup of matt pond PA since its inception. Brian Pearl (guitars/piano), Dan Crowell (drums), and Daniel Mitha (bass) joined Pond for the recording of Emblems, which was released on Altitude in May 2004. Concerts with Keane and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists followed through the end of the year. Prior to releasing their fifth full-length album, the band issued a seasonal EP, Winter Songs, in January 2005. Several Arrows Later followed in October, marking the debut of cellist Dana Feder. Tour dates with Liz Phair and Guster also coincided with its release. In early 2006, Mitha departed matt pond PA and was replaced by Steve Jewett. A limited-run EP, If You Want Blood, was released the following summer, and the band returned with a new full-length album, Last Light, in September 2007.

For his new album, Pond holed himself up in a cabin outside of Bearsville, New York, with producer Chris Hansen and several guest musicians. The resulting record, The Dark Leaves, was released in 2010, and additional material from those cabin sessions found its way onto several EPs, including the digital release Auri Sacra Fames. After fronting the band he shared a name with for over a decade, Pond dropped the "PA" from matt pond PA in late 2012. Working again with collaborator Chris Hansen, Pond recorded the first album to be issued under his own name, The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand, released in early 2013. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

sweet!
Man! I like this band! Simple, but great!
I adore MPPA so much. So unique and fresh.
I fell in love with this girl and I took her to my favorite band's (aka Matt Pond PA) concert in SF. We broke up and it hurt to listen to it. Though this band became my brother's and my good friend's favorite too, I couldn't bear to listen to it ever again. 3 years later, I am broken up with another special girl but in turn Matt Pond PA has been unlocked for me to enjoy. The paradoxial sways of the bouncing jug of red paint...

Admitting mppa is one of my very favorite bands: I love every single one of his/their albums. If you like any Matt Pond, you'll want them all. He's poetic, a brilliant songwriter, and utterly unique. Beautiful music!! (BTW, PA for Pennsylvania : even he regrets the name.)
"Nature of maps" was a good album it kinda lost me in the middle but picks back up in the end... But I'm not a critic pick it up for yourself.
They seem overdue for a real full-length album.

PA?
Best Matt Pond PA album is Several Arrows Later, without a doubt. It has a great mix of beats, moods, and lyrics. Last Light is alright, but not as chill - it's almost a little harsh at times.
"Last Light" is great for Fall road trips. Everything else is great anytime, anywhere. I never get tired of Matt Pond PA.
Really digging "Several Arrows Later" at the moment but you can't go wrong with "The Nature of Maps"

last light is good.

Best Matt Pond album? What do you recommend?

MPPA did an EP entitled Deer Apartments. It's worth searching for, but hard to find.
Summer is Coming is probably the best song ever composed, hands-down.
Emblems was my first, now I have that, Winter Songs and Several Arrows Later, I loved Emblems, it wasn't off of my ear-buds for a whole fall, which interestingl y enough is the best season in which to listen to that one.
Live Matt Pond PA is as good as recorded Matt Pond PA. Loved them when they came to San Diego a few years ago. Please come back!
Couldn't believe these guys when I saw them warm up for Guster. Now I think I might be a bigger mppa fan than Guster! First time they played "Halloween", I knew I would love this band. They need to come to Michigan more often.
Nice to know music is alive and kicking, great sound.
The Winter Songs E.P. is my favorite, although any of them are good.
Thinking about buying an album, please recommend favorites!
How come Emblems is on Several Arrows later? heh. Anyway, New Hampshire is my favorite song. But yea, it makes me want to cry.
wow im pretty sure matt pond pa exists as one of my favorite bands.
