I have great love and admiration for Kumu's music & chant. It truly awakens and makes the Hawaiian parts of my hapa heritage burn with something undescribable! Mahalo nui loa Kumu!
Kumu Mark hasn't recorded anything since Call It What You Like in 2003. He's devoting his time to the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, and to his new hula competition, Ka Hula Hou (next round in February 2013).
Yes, this chanting is still happening in 2012! The Academy of Hawaiian Arts (AHA) is located in Oakland, CA. AHA will be participating in this year's Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo next month; there is a performance in the works for September of 2012, location TBA (but probably at Chabot College). Where is the Academy? Is this chanting still happening in 2012? Where in the Bay Area can I see performances?
In 2003, Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu began anew by founding the 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Academy of Hawaiian Arts (AHA) in Oakland, CA. AHA's mission is to offer instruction in the cultural arts of Hawai’i, including dance, music, composition and language. Ho’omalu also established MKH Productions, a production and publishing company for his music and dance projects. Kumu Ho'omalu and the Academy dancers have garnered awards and renown since 2003, including sold out concerts in Japan.
