Marian McPartland

Marian McPartland became famous for hosting her Piano Jazz radio program beginning in 1978, but she was a well-respected pianist decades before. She played in a four-piano vaudeville act in England and performed on the European continent for the troops during World War II. In Belgium in 1944, she met cornetist Jimmy McPartland and they soon married. Marian moved with her husband to the United States in 1946, where she sometimes played with him even though her style was more modern than his Dixieland-oriented groups. McPartland eventually had her own trio at the Embers (1950) and the Hickory House (1952-1960), which until 1957 included drummer Joe Morello. She recorded regularly for Savoy and Capitol during the 1950s and also made sessions for Argo (1958), Time (1960 and 1963), Sesac, and Dot. Although eventually divorced from Jimmy, they remained close friends, sometimes played together, and even remarried just weeks before his death. She formed her own Halcyon label and recorded several fine albums between 1969-1977. McPartland also made three albums for Tony Bennett's Improv label during 1976-1977 before signing with Concord, where she remained after 1978. The Jazz Alliance label has made available over 30 CDs' worth of material from Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz show, some of which are quite fascinating and significant. McPartland died in August 2013 at her home in Port Washington, New York; she was 95 years old. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

She introduced me to jazz! (In its broader context) I would listen to her show and enjoyed her performances with her guest.
She was so versatile and nimble - so creative and lyrical. I really miss her Piano Jazz on Sunday. Such a great soul.

very, very nice

I. Really. Like. Marian. Mcpartland
Carlo--you speaka truth! Caught her live in NY many years ago in NY's Village= instant love-followe d her subsequent PBS radio show over many yrs when she used her gig to share sooo many other great talented muscians in duets!! -As for Shearing- well-he began my first teen-age jazz vynil collection in UK-& still have 'em all at 71!! Some great Brit big bands too back when -incl Ray Noble Orchestar w/singer Al Bowly & later Johnny Dankworth & Cleo Laine -among others.
Two of the best things the Brits ever sent us were Marian McPartland and George Shearing; true icons of jazz piano. Want to introduce a novice to jazz? Start with either one.

Marian McPartland is irreplaceabl e ; she was one of a kind.

The world lost a wonderful musician yesterday when Marian McPartland died.
Piano Jazz was part of my Sunday morning for years. Ms McPartland is a superb accompanist, is a very versatile stylist and was mature enough to put up with some very egocentric guests. I'll always remember the show she did with Dave Brubeck. Full of humor and good music.
also glad to see her proper bio in its proper place but still need to change Teddy Wilson ref on 1st page heading
Great & talented indestructib l e lady! loved her wonderful personality & superb improvs with major-talent guests on her radio-show in 60s NYC & -recently heard many reruns on public radio in PA but now back in CA cant find it.

can i get paid for putting the wrong stuff all over this site too......... . . .
so where is the bio of M.McP.
info41351
So how much is the guy making who edits the biographies? He is grossly overpaid. Teddy Wilson's bio instead of Marian McPartland's has been up erroneously for over a year. Hire a guy like Tee Watts and get it right.
I listened to her for years on NPR and never knew how deeply rooted she was in classic jazz.. She had Diana Krall on one day and did a duet version of Route 66. I wept....
I don't think Pandora is aware that they are displaying Teddy Wilson's bio for Marian. Here's a better source of info re: the host of Piano Jazz -- www.marianmc p a r t l a n d . c o m
So tell me, already, how many gazillion comments did ya'll receive telling you this was a finely written biography - - but too bad it wan't about Marion McPartland? That's okay tho, I DID want to know about an equally fine jazz pianist, Teddy Wilson - - and I DID!
Where have I been? Obviously not where one of the most talented Jazz Pianist I've heard has been. I'm 70 now and have missed out on a truly talented performer. I'll try to catch up now and enjoy every minuet of the process.

I love Marians style! Very unique and introspectiv e ! I heard about her first as a guest on a jazz show on the old FM jazz station here in LA, KKGO. Blood Count was incredible and to this day remains one of my all time favorite pieces by her.

Please move the Teddy Wilson info. and place the Marian McPartland bio here.
I came to know her, through her radio show on NPR and have always loved her style
Fabulous. how can she even be described? nd she never stops!

Ahhh and her story with the cornetist fascinating. . . i s there a potential movie there with her life?

Her radio show is one high-light of my saturdays... m y gratitude to her and guests
I have listened to her Piano Jazz radio show for a long long time! She is incredibly talented and is as good as any of the guest she has performed with. I love her music!
jpmcguire00
She was an incredible pioneer in demonstratin g that women can play wonderful, beautiful jazz piano. I'm sure there are many, many female pianists who would/could benefit from her music and her spirit.
She is, just the best!
True enough, the cover in the upper left hand lists Teddy Wilson, and underneath the piano keys, "Marian McPartland's " is squeezed in above "Piano Jazz." Too bad - I think McPartland does a better job.
Indeed, a National Treasure.
Well, it seems obvious. Teddy Wilson is playing and she featured this song on a collection from the jazz piano show she hosts.
stephenwfunk
This is titled Marion McPartland not Teddy Wilson
I would argue that "Silent Pool" is her best work although I love everything.. .

Why is Pamdora giving us the biography of Teddy Wilson when we are listening to the great sounds of Marian McPartland?? Well, system errors aside, Marian is one of the most underated artists of our time. And her radio show is a great musical resource. BRAVO Marian!
I'm a longtime fan of Ms. McPartland and her show, Piano Jazz. She's a national treasure. Thank you, Pandora!

First time I heard her. What a treat. This is why I like pandora.

Lovely
Opps, I love Marian McPartland but I was refering to Dick Gilroy who plays in a similar style.
He is incredible. An unbelievable talent and genuinely nice guy. Oddly enough he is a retired dentist. Who could be more qualified to tickle the ivories.
the old gal still has it all
I love Marian McParland. He Piano Jazz show is fabulous, excellent collaboratio n s and stories - and I love her voice - it is so soothing.
