Manu Dibango

Dibango is Cameroon's, and perhaps Africa's, best-known jazz saxophonist. Starting in the 1950s, he became a globe-trotting musician, living and performing in France, Belgium, Jamaica, Zaire, and Cote d'Ivoire, as well as in Cameroon. In 1960, Dibango was one of the founding members of the Zairean band African Jazz, with whom he spent five years. World attention came to Dibango with the release in 1972 of Soul Makossa, a work that actually had precious little of the makossa sound in it, and scored later hits with Seventies and Ibida. Dibango's output has been prodigious and multi-faceted. He has worked with musicians as diverse as Fela Kuti, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Don Cherry, and the Fania All-Stars. In addition to being one of the leading jazz saxophonists of his generation, Dibango has also run nightclubs, directed orchestras, and started one of the first African musical journals. A later release, Polysonik -- featuring English rapper MC Mello, Cameroonian singer Charlotte M'Bango leading a choral section, and sampled pygmy flutes -- shows that Dibango is continuing to flourish and expand in challenging new directions. ~ Leon Jackson, Rovi

We need more African music on Pandora!!
I just love the beats incredible ease and full! Now for some Fela
Thank you for this. Please add more makossa and more african music. Grand Manu as Manu Dibango is fondly called is a great cameroonian and african and world musician. Will also like to see Francis Bebey and others. I am sure pandora is going to expand with time.

Good stuff!

By the way, for those craving Fela or Femi Kuti, you sadly won't find them here (knock on wood and beat on doors), but there are quite a few quality Afrobeat artists. You can look at my "Kuti Afrobeat Funk" page to get some of the names.

I have to agree with all the other comments on this page... the music of Africa, and the Middle East, and Asia are all underreprese n t e d on Pandora. And when a great non-Western artist pops up, it seems to always be under the umbrella of "world music." Pandora is amazing, but it needs to diversify to reflect the world of music out there.
Where are the geniuses of African music? Fela!!!!!!!! King Sunny Ade!!!!!!! and SO SO MANY OTHERS!!!! Definitely a shortcoming of Pandora. Also where are all the FANTASTIC HAITIAN ARTISTS? No Tabou Combo??? That's downright shameful! And no T-Vice, Djakout Mizik, Carimi, Boukman Eksperyans?? ? Get with your WORLD MUSIC pandora!!!
Please add more African Artists.

I agree with you wvcottrell! Definitely need more African music and world music. How can you not have Fela and other amazing musicians available?!!
rgirl4life
Ah, so thats where Micheal Jackson got that part in "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin"

I added creative content from Manu Dibango to my Ali Farka Toure station-- Tried to add Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Sonny Okosun. All of whom are masters of "world" or "African" music genres. Was surprised to find out that only Manu Dibango was available in the music genome project. I echo phatbonnie's comment in saying that there should be much more world music available on Pandora. Maybe an additional category (e.g. genre or style). What about some soca and calypso?
Thanks Pandora!
I was just saying the other day that I wish Pandora had more world music.
I adore African music and this really just made my day! Please play more!!!
