When Latin funk and Latin rock had its brief moment in the sun during the '70s, a number of groups emerged. Most were imitation Santanas, but at least Malo could boast that it had a real Santana in the lineup. Carlos Santana's brother Jorge headed Malo, and he possessed a little of his brother's vocal sound. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough to keep Malo going more than a few years. Their debut LP for Warner Bros. reached number 14 on the pop charts, but it was all downhill from there. The single "Suavecito" peaked at number 18 pop. They got very little attention from R&B or funk fans. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
Savecito remnids me of my childhood memories when my sister would wear out the record needle from playing it over and over...miss those times.. Now that was real music straight from the heart.

i remember Malo at the Wiskey ago go in hollywood. at that time they had balcony and the band were up there playing it was a trip watching them and having a drink, i'll never forget that night.i happen to see Buddy Miles in the audience boy was he big. oh! what a night.
Malo has made many appearances across the country since then and has melted our hearts. We remember those days and the fun we had with their music in the background. Seeing them in Denver was a blast and the patry afterwards was an honor. Come and visit south Florida, you are loved here too! Mia
pandora..even though mainstream didn't recognize MALO's talent..Chicano's who grew up during this time embrace this group as KILLER and this rythm lives in our hearts. mainstream can't handle it!!!!
Those comments from Wynn are a superficial review at best. These were not Santana wannabees. The lineup of Malo musicians speaks volumes to the quality of their sound which was more of a descarga crossover to rock /jazz/blues. Not meant to be pure like Fania recording artists at all, and certainly not trying to be like Santana.
Always a must for Family Gatherings and celebratiions!!! Cant wait to see them LIVE on Dec 2 at the Universal Amphitheater, la ca 2011

This type of music moved your soul and then body followed, Malo, Joe Battan, Carlos Santana, Herb Albert, etc....., Growing up listening to this music was the best time of my life, Watching and listening to the older guys singing Doo-Wop, and and trying to cope a kiss from the girls, man, those was the days!!!! Love Apache from the South Bronx!!!
Your discography is missing "Malo Dos" which has some screaming trumpet playing that my old trumpet playing friends really enjoyed...we were into Maynard Ferguson, Chase, Doc Severinson... Malo also had an album in mid- Seventies, "Ascension" I believe, which was really good and I have it in my vinyl collection
Jorge también tocó con los Fania Allstars. Lo vi en un video de YouTube.

I saw Malo, Tierra and El Chicano in Sin City Las Vegas. It reminded me of back in the day and also of my roots which from a music standpoint almost seemed as it had faded somewhat. It's a good memory but unfortunatel y it was just a "Chicano Spark" that burned out too soon. I bought the CD's that night even though they were from a live recording at THE HOP in Puente Hills, CA some 12 years ago!! imagine that?
