In 1996, multi-instrumentalist Joshua McKay and his drum-playing brother Mischo McKay found themselves both living in Athens, GA, after a three-year separation (they had last lived together in Gainesville, FL, where they were both in a band called Emperor Moth). Back together in an offbeat college town, the musical twosome quickly formed Macha along with another multi-instrumentalist friend, Kai Reidl. Not easily pigeonholed, Macha employs voice, guitar, and drums along with many non-traditional instruments -- hammered dulcimer, vibraphone, gongs, and a synthesizer called "the fun machine," amongst others -- to create music that is a combination of drone rock and Indonesian folk music. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1998 for Jetset Records. It was followed a year later by See It Another Way, an album that was marked by the inclusion of Wes Martin (yet another multi-instrumentalist) as a permanent member of the band. In 2000, Macha teamed up with Bedhead, another brother-powered (Bubba and Matt Kadane) drone outfit, for the mini-album Macha Loved Bedhead. The group returned in 2004 with Forget Tomorrow. ~ Kelso Jacks, Rovi
Some of the greatest and most memorable live sonic memories I will likely ever have were watching this band perform on multiple occasions... Their sound would reach cacophony climaxes with sonic melody almost palpably swirling through the room (I was stone cold sober). Truly magical. Still need to check out "SEAWORTHY". Thanks for the experience guys. Wish you well...
I would love to here the first album. I think it came out or I bought it in the fall of 1999. I believe it is self titled. I lost it somehow and miss it sorely. Wait, I just realized that this is not for suggestions. Oh well. Macha- they are amazing.
Get on board with these guys man! Josh McKay is a top flight musician of the new folk-rock world music with some metal influence. Teaches music at the University of Georgia. Wrote much of the music and collaborated on the Lyrics with Aleka's Attic for about 5 years in the late 80's after Bedhead and before Emporer Moth. But you need to get into the key albums he produced with his brother and two other fine musicians as Macha AND the subsequent SEAWORTHY (new artist and CD). Not content with
