Part feminist-inspired riot grrrl band, part gross-out performance art, part hard rock band, New York City's Lunachicks are tastelessly in-your-face and proud of it (the back cover of their LP Binge and Purge showed them covered in fake vomit). Fronted by Theo Kogan, whose on-stage gear consisted of platform shoes, short dresses, surreal makeup, and huge wigs, the L-Chicks grind out a reasonable, messy amalgam of Ramones/Dictators high-energy guitar rock. Song subjects include trashy '70s TV icons ("Jan Brady"), suffering after consuming too much junk food ("Binge and Purge"), and tabloid-style hysteria ("Babysitters on Acid"). Not particularly artful, the Lunachicks are wild and funny, and the music can be pretty hot, but the humor and the rock don't hold up after repeated spins. No matter what your tolerance for this kind of rock is, you'd be better off listening to L7, Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, Joan Jett, or Huggy Bear first, and then finding time for the mixed blessings of the Lunachicks. ~ John Dougan, Rovi
By the way folks, in 1998 in NYC, John Dougan was brought up on stage at a Lunachicks concert and bent over the drummer's lap and spanked by the lead singer with an inordinately large dildo. Thus, the scathing review backed by nothing more than John's scorned opinion.

Saw the Lunachicks as the opened up for RHH in Hollywood around 1996 and immediately liked 'em. Come on....a hot sleeved blondie running up and down the stage screaming like a maniac? Pure and unbridled Utopia. ---------> DONUTS !!!
This Kind of rock?! You mean rock music made by women? Not that I'm a fan of the Lunachicks, but how about NOT assigning a mysoginist to review female musicians?
Luxury Problem made me love punk again. Period. Suck on that Mr. Dougan-Dooche.

John Dougan, what a TOOL!

John Dougan is a dips**t. I played the Luxury Problem album so many times I had to forcefully stop myself from listening to it so I wouldn't chaffe my eardrums. It's still one of my favorite albums of all time.
jz7878 knows whats up....bios shouldn't be about someones opinion of the music.

john dougan has no clue what he's talking about. Has anyone listened to those kick a** guitar riffs. And yeah skullsnroses71....they are super hot. They are willing to be completely disgusting and ugly and unconventional. THAT is sexy considering the way women think they have to look and act these days. And has anyone listened to the sexy vocals, c'mon people get with the program. Yosch Martinelli, it's the 21st century.....women can be as loud and bitchy as they want and for the record....how
I also saw them in a dive in New Orleans somewhere around '93-'94, and it was an awesome show. While I liked L7's shows around the same time, by 95' their live show sucked, and I would never spend anything to see them again, while The Lunachicks, on the other hand, impressed me so much I would love to see them again!

i also disagree with mr.dougan i saw them live in 93 and it was a kick a** performance."jerk.."was an awesome album
John Dougan, you are either a moron or, have never heard Bratmobile. Huggy Bear, and Joan Jett share only their genders with Lunachicks. Musically there is little commonality. You sir, are a fool.
i'm going to listen to jerk of all trades cause i love it!!! love it!!!! llove it!!!!!!!!!

Jerk of All Trades has been one of my top CD's for over 10 years, and it still creates new fans when my friends hear it for the first time. "Better off listening to L7...."? Pu leez.... stop writing reviews and get back to your Bolton albums Dougan!

Yeah John, besides the irony of the band I'm stickin up for your not gettin any p**sy with those ears.
I honestly believe that Theo Kogan has one of the most amazing voices that I have ever heard from a female vocalist. Lunachicks is smarter than Dougan is giving them credit for (Less Teeth and More Tits? Fallopian Rhapsody? Come ON. These songs are about social issues!) Every other band that I've looked up has a positive review, so I really believe that Lunachicks's should really be changed.
I have to disagree with j dougan about the Lunachicks not holding up to repeated spins...Luxury Problem has been in my active cd case since the day I picked it up, back in either 99 or 00 at a live show... granted, its a little slicker than, say, Babysitters On Acid (almost 10 years older, and rawer), but hell, for a punk band they are sure maturing (if i dare use that term) better than most of their contemporaries. They have also been one of the best, consistently fun live acts since day one. I
