Louis Spohr (1784-1859), composer and virtuoso violinist, was regarded in his time as Germany's answer to Paganini, as well as a creative genius equal to Beethoven. Time has proved to the latter notion incorrect, though Spohr's many concertos, symphonies, and chamber works are charming pieces, somewhat in the vein of Mozart. Much of his music became obscure, but his Nonet has remained quite popular. Spohr has also been remembered for inventing the violin's chin rest, for introducing rehearsal letters into scores, for being one of the first to use the baton in conducting, and even for dabbling in chess and painting. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
